League of Legends Classic officially has a release date. During the MSI Finals, Riot Games announced that the nostalgic version of its iconic MOBA will launch on July 29, 2026, giving longtime players a chance to revisit the game’s early days with a modern twist.
The announcement was made during a special League of Legends Classic showmatch and was first reported by Eurogamer. Riot has also encouraged players to pre-download the game before launch.
Classic gameplay with community-driven updates
While Riot has yet to reveal every detail, League of Legends Classic is designed to recreate the game’s original experience, bringing back early champions, gameplay mechanics, and nostalgic builds that defined its first years.
However, Riot also confirmed that future patches will be partially decided through community voting. This means players will have a say in balancing the game, potentially leading to a different evolution than the original version experienced over a decade ago.
The announcement also hints at the return of memorable builds such as AP Master Yi and Stunlock Sion, although community votes could determine whether these powerful strategies remain unchanged or receive adjustments over time.
Another major gaming franchise embraces nostalgia
League of Legends Classic joins a growing trend of developers reviving legacy versions of popular games. Similar projects such as World of Warcraft Classic have demonstrated that nostalgic experiences continue to attract veteran players while introducing newer audiences to earlier versions of beloved titles.
Riot is also preparing a broader overhaul of League of Legends, with a full remake reportedly planned for 2027. Until then, League of Legends Classic offers players an opportunity to revisit the game’s roots while helping shape its future through community participation.
