SEGA made several major announcements during Summer Game Fest 2026, including Persona 6 and Alien: Isolation 2, but one reveal stood out for being completely unexpected. SONIC PICO PARK was officially announced as a new Sonic-licensed title, offering a very different kind of experience compared to the franchise’s usual high-speed platformers.
Developed by TECOPARK, the game is a crossover with the popular indie puzzle series Pico Park, bringing cooperative gameplay into the Sonic universe. The title is scheduled to release later this year, with more details expected soon.
A Multiplayer-First Sonic Experience
Instead of focusing on speed and solo progression, SONIC PICO PARK is built entirely around cooperative gameplay. The game supports 2 to 8 players, both locally and online, with cross-play functionality also confirmed.
The core concept is simple but challenging. Players must work together to reach the goal at the end of each level, but progress is only possible when the entire team coordinates their actions. This means every jump, movement, and puzzle solution requires communication and timing.
According to the official Steam page, the game follows the same foundational rules as Pico Park, where cooperation is essential and even small mistakes can force the entire team to restart a level.
What makes the game stand out is how it blends classic Sonic elements into its puzzle-focused gameplay. Players can control familiar characters like Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, each contributing to how puzzles are approached.
Traditional Sonic features such as rings, springs, and loop structures are integrated into level design, but instead of being used purely for speed, they now function as tools or obstacles. For example, rings can help players survive hazards, while springs can either assist progress or disrupt the entire team if triggered at the wrong time.
The game also includes signature abilities like the Spin Dash, which can be used to break obstacles or move across dangerous terrain. In some cases, character-specific traits come into play, such as Tails’ ability to carry teammates across gaps, adding more variety to cooperative strategies.

Designed for Chaos and Coordination
While the mechanics may sound straightforward, the real challenge comes from execution. The game is intentionally designed to create unpredictable situations where one player’s mistake can impact everyone else.
This leads to a mix of coordination and chaos, where teams must repeatedly attempt puzzles until they find the right rhythm. The gameplay encourages communication but also leaves room for comedic failures, making it especially appealing for group play.
The balance between frustration and fun is a key part of the experience, as players learn to adapt to each other’s timing and decisions while steering increasingly complex levels.
