Fans of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves have a new reason to hope for a sequel. Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have confirmed that the screenplay for Dungeons & Dragons 2 is already complete, with Hasbro and the film’s producers still interested in making it. The major hurdle is finding a new studio willing to finance and distribute the project.
The update comes after Paramount-Skydance decided not to move ahead with the sequel for financial reasons. Despite that setback, the filmmakers have not abandoned their plans to return to the fantasy world established by Honor Among Thieves, leaving the door open for another studio to take over the project.
Dungeons & Dragons 2 Needs a Studio Partner
Speaking with The Playlist, Goldstein confirmed that Hasbro remains strongly supportive of the sequel. When asked whether efforts were still underway to make the economics work, he responded,
“Yeah, absolutely,”
before explaining that
“Hasbro is a big believer in it”
and would want to proceed if a suitable studio partner could be found.
Daley similarly confirmed that the filmmakers are proud of the completed script but acknowledged that financing remains a serious obstacle.
“Who knows if it ever gets made, but we were proud of the sequel script and hope that at some point it does find a path,”
he said during the discussion with The Playlist.
The original Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves earned more than $205 million worldwide and received a 91% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, according to Paramount’s official information. The movie starred Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith and Sophia Lillis as a group of adventurers caught up in a dangerous magical heist.
Daley believes the sequel would also benefit from not having to spend its opening act introducing the characters and their relationships again.
“We fell in love with the characters,”
he said, adding that the next story could
“launch right into the story”
because audiences would already understand the central group.
The directors have also pointed to the first movie’s release circumstances as factors that hurt its theatrical performance. It arrived only days before The Super Mario Bros. Movie and shortly after controversy surrounding changes to Dungeons & Dragons’ licensing rules, while Daley also felt the marketing could have done more to attract viewers unfamiliar with the tabletop game.
For now, Dungeons & Dragons 2 remains without an official production greenlight or release date. However, the completed screenplay and continued support from Hasbro and the producers mean the sequel is still actively seeking a path to the big screen.
