A third Don’t Breathe movie is officially in development, with director Fede Álvarez confirming that Stephen Lang and Jane Levy are expected to return for the next installment. The filmmaker revealed the news during a Q&A celebrating the 10th anniversary of the original film at Beyond Fest in Santa Monica.
Álvarez appeared at the event alongside Lang, Levy and Dylan Minnette, who starred in the 2016 home-invasion thriller. The announcement immediately drew a strong reaction from the audience, with the director revealing that the project already has a screenplay.
Stephen Lang and Jane Levy Are Returning
During the Q&A, Álvarez confirmed that the third film has moved beyond a simple idea and already has a script.
“There’s a screenplay for ‘Don’t Breathe 3.’ Jane will be back and Slang, (Stephen Lang), will be back,”
the filmmaker told the audience.
The confirmation marks Levy’s return to the franchise after she played Rocky, one of the burglars at the center of the first movie. Lang is also expected to reprise his role as the Blind Man, the terrifying former Gulf War veteran whose home becomes the setting for the original film’s deadly confrontation.
Interestingly, Álvarez did not mention Dylan Minnette returning for Don’t Breathe 3. Minnette played Alex, Rocky’s accomplice, in the first movie, leaving his potential involvement in the new story unclear.
Released in 2016, Don’t Breathe became a major commercial success for Sony. The thriller earned around $89 million domestically and $157 million worldwide, turning its relatively contained premise into a successful horror franchise.
The 2021 sequel shifted its attention almost entirely toward Lang’s character. Álvarez remained involved as a writer and producer, while Rodo Sayagues directed the follow-up. Don’t Breathe 2 earned approximately $53 million worldwide.
No release date, production schedule or director for the third film has been announced yet. However, Álvarez’s confirmation that a screenplay exists and that Lang and Levy are attached gives the project a much clearer path forward.
