Practical Magic is a 1998 romantic fantasy comedy directed by Griffin Dunne and based on Alice Hoffman’s novel. The story follows sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, descendants of a long line of witches who have inherited a family curse that prevents them and their descendants from finding lasting love. After Gillian’s abusive boyfriend Jimmy Angelov dies unexpectedly, the sisters attempt to bring him back to life, only to unleash a dangerous supernatural force. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman lead the film as Sally and Gillian, with Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest playing their eccentric aunts Frances and Jet. Although Practical Magic received a lukewarm critical response when it premiered, its blend of sisterhood, romance, witchcraft, humor and autumnal atmosphere eventually helped it develop a devoted cult following.
