The Star Wars saga, beloved as it is today, almost took a dramatically different path, thanks to George Lucas’s myriad of imaginative ideas.
One such early concept from the second draft of Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back involved Anakin Skywalker, known as Darth Vader, torturing his son Luke in an attempt to lure him to the Dark Side through his love for Princess Leia.
Released in 1980, The Empire Strikes Back not only shocked audiences with the revelation of Vader being Luke’s father but also had several twists that never made it to the screen.
One of these drafts had Vader exploiting Luke’s affection for Leia to sway him towards darkness, a plot twist that would have potentially seen Luke succumb to the allure of power, much like his father.
Ultimately, this narrative never came to fruition, likely due to Lucas altering his plans. Instead, the film we know saw Leia choosing Han Solo over Luke and Han being frozen in carbonite by Vader.
Interestingly, in earlier drafts, Han’s fate was also different; he was supposed to leave Leia and Luke behind to handle urgent matters, leaving Leia to reconcile her feelings for Han while rejecting Luke, unaware he was her brother.
Looking back, it’s clear that George Lucas made the right decision to scrape these original ideas for the film, as they might have altered the Star Wars saga in ways fans might not have appreciated.
