Prime Video has revealed the first teaser for Bloodaxe, its upcoming historical action series from Vikings creator Michael Hirst, and confirmed that the show will premiere on January 20, 2027. The announcement arrived at New York Comic Con on October 9, 2026, where Hirst, co-showrunner Horatio Hirst, and cast members Xavier Molyneux, Jessica Madsen, and Levi Miller introduced the series to fans.

Set in 10th-century Norway, Bloodaxe explores the violent struggle for power surrounding one of the most famous figures in Norse history. The story follows Erik Bloodaxe and his wife, Gunnhild, known as the Mother of Kings, as they attempt to secure the Norwegian throne amid rival claims, shifting alliances, and deadly betrayals.

The first season will consist of eight episodes, all premiering exclusively on Prime Video worldwide. The series has also secured an early renewal, with its second season already in production in Ireland.

The Bloodaxe teaser introduces a kingdom on the brink of war, where competing claims to the throne threaten to tear Norway apart. Erik and Gunnhild must navigate rivalries, betrayals, and shifting loyalties as powerful Scandinavian rulers and an English king become involved in the conflict.

The series centers on Erik Bloodaxe, played by Xavier Molyneux, and Gunnhild, Mother of Kings, portrayed by Jessica Madsen. Their rise takes place against a turbulent political backdrop, with the struggle for royal power driving the show’s action and drama.

The first season features Molyneux and Madsen alongside Karlis Arnolds Avots, Levi Miller, Rod Hallett, Alina Tomnikov, Sisse Marie, Rune Temte, and Jesper Christensen.

Michael Hirst and Horatio Hirst serve as the show’s writers, showrunners, and executive producers. Michael Hirst previously created Vikings, while the new series continues his exploration of Norse history and power struggles.

Additional executive producers include Morgan O’Sullivan, Steve Stark, Arturo Interian, John Weber, Sheila Hockin, and Fred Toye. MGM Television, a division of Amazon MGM Studios, produces the series.

According to Prime Video’s official announcement, all eight episodes of Bloodaxe Season 1 will be released on January 20, 2027, across more than 240 countries and territories. Season 2 is already in production in Ireland, giving the Norse saga a future beyond its debut season.
