Anime distributor AnimEigo has officially announced the Blu-ray home media release of Alien Nine, bringing the cult-favorite OVA back for a new generation of viewers. The release is scheduled for June 9, marking the first time the series will be available in high definition.
Originally based on the manga by Hitoshi Tomizawa, Alien Nine gained attention for its unusual mix of sci-fi horror and school-life storytelling. With its distinct tone and unsettling concepts, the OVA has built a lasting reputation among anime fans. This upcoming Blu-ray aims to preserve that legacy while enhancing the viewing experience through modern restoration techniques.
What Alien Nine Is About
Set in a near-future world where alien invasions are a routine occurrence, Alien Nine follows a group of elementary school students tasked with defending their school from extraterrestrial threats. The story centers on Yuri, a timid sixth grader who is reluctantly chosen for this dangerous responsibility. Alongside her classmates Kasumi and Kumi, she must capture and eliminate invading aliens using unusual biological tools.
One of the series’ most unique elements is the use of “Borgs,” symbiotic alien helmets that attach to the girls and help them fight. While effective in combat, these creatures come with disturbing traits, adding a layer of body horror to the narrative. This blend of innocence and unsettling imagery is a defining characteristic of Alien Nine, setting it apart from more traditional action anime.
The OVA spans four episodes with a total runtime of approximately 113 minutes. Despite its short length, it delivers a compact yet memorable story that combines psychological tension, emotional character arcs, and bizarre science fiction elements. This mix has helped the series maintain a dedicated fanbase over the years.
Creative Team and Legacy
Alien Nine features an experienced creative team that contributed to its distinctive tone. The screenplay was written by Sadayuki Murai, known for his work on acclaimed projects like Perfect Blue and Durarara. Direction was handled by Yasuhiro Irie, who later gained recognition for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
Taro Maki, a prominent figure in anime production with credits including Tokyo Godfathers and Millennium Actress, also produced the OVA. This combination of talent helped shape Alien Nine into a project that stands out for its creative ambition and unusual storytelling approach.

Since its original release, Alien Nine has been regarded as a niche but influential title within the anime community. Its willingness to experiment with tone and genre has earned it both critical attention and long-term appreciation from fans who value unconventional narratives.
What the Blu-ray Release Includes
The upcoming Blu-ray release offers more than just a visual upgrade. According to the official announcement, the OVA has undergone a new AstroRes restoration and upscale, allowing it to be presented in HD for the first time. This enhancement is expected to improve image clarity while preserving the original artistic style.
In addition to the restored episodes, the Blu-ray includes a variety of bonus features. These include clean opening and ending animations, original promotional materials, interviews with the English cast and production staff, and a featurette titled “Steps to Alien Fighters” featuring the Japanese voice cast. An interview with executive producer Taro Maki is also included, offering insight into the production process.
Priced at $29.95, the Blu-ray will be region-free and available in both English dub and Japanese audio with subtitles. With its mix of restored visuals and extensive extras, the release is positioned as a comprehensive package for both longtime fans and newcomers interested in exploring a unique entry in anime history.
