Shinta Harekawa’s Akira Failing in Love has officially surpassed 1 million copies in circulation worldwide, marking a major milestone for the romantic comedy manga. The announcement was made in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday combined 42nd and 43rd issue on September 16, 2026.
The series, also known as Momose Akira no Hatsukoi Hatan-chū, began serialization in Weekly Shonen Sunday in August 2024. Shogakukan released the first collected volume in December 2024, with the manga reaching its eighth volume on September 16.
The latest milestone comes as the series continues to expand its readership outside Japan. VIZ Media is publishing the manga in English, with its fourth volume released on September 8.
What Is Akira Failing in Love About?
Akira Failing in Love follows Akira, a high school student who returns to the countryside determined to win over her childhood crush. However, her attempts at romance become complicated because she fails to recognize that her feelings may already be mutual.
VIZ Media describes the story as a tale of two people who are essentially “fools in love” because Akira is too oblivious to realize that her crush likes her back.
Harekawa previously created Senpai, This Can’t Be Love!, a BL manga that launched in 2019 and later received an eight-episode live-action adaptation in 2022. The creator also worked on Three Exorcism Siblings, which concluded with its seventh volume in September 2023.
With Akira Failing in Love now exceeding 1 million copies in circulation worldwide, the milestone highlights the growing reach of Harekawa’s latest series.
