Who would have imagined that John Krasinski’s leap from playing Jim Halpert on The Office to directing a horror film would lead to one of the most talked-about horror franchises of recent years? A Quiet Place (2018) was a surprising hit, blending tense creature feature elements with a heartfelt family drama.

The film’s success was undeniable, both critically and commercially, prompting a sequel, A Quiet Place Part II. This follow-up continued the story in a post-COVID world, expanding the alien-invaded universe further and proving to be another box office success.

However, news of a prequel might have left fans skeptical. After all, a prequel without familiar characters could seem less interesting, especially if it included a colon in its title. But don’t let that deter you.

A Quiet Place: Day One not only justifies its existence but does so with a focus on character development and a fresh setting. This film offers a new take on the A Quiet Place universe by showing the initial invasion of New York City by the aliens.

Unlike the previous films, this prequel doesn’t rely on the experiences of Krasinski and his team. It’s a new beginning where the world is only starting to face these deadly extraterrestrials. Thanks to strong performances and a compelling story, A Quiet Place: Day One stands out while staying true to the core elements that made the franchise popular.

What Is ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ About?

In A Quiet Place: Day One, the story follows Sam (Lupita Nyong’o), a weary poet who is battling terminal cancer. Sam spends her time writing poems that reflect her disillusionment with life and shares them with her support group in the hospice where she resides.

Her closest friends are Reueben (Alex Wolff), a compassionate nurse, and her cat, Frodo. During a visit to Manhattan for a puppet show, the group is unexpectedly called back to the bus amid reports of an incident in the city. The aliens, known for their acute hearing, soon make their presence felt, plunging one of the world’s busiest cities into chaos.

The film’s primary focus is not on mere survival but on making the most of the time left. Sam is determined to reach a pizza restaurant in Harlem that holds significant meaning from her childhood. Along the way, she meets Eric (Joseph Quinn), a law student feeling isolated in New York City while his family remains in England.

Without purpose or support, Eric joins Sam (and Frodo) in her mission to get back home before it’s too late. Together, they face fierce aliens, a wandering cat, and Sam’s illness as they navigate this new reality.

‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ Is More About Character Than Action

At first glance, A Quiet Place: Day One might appear to tread familiar ground, but it sets out to do something different from the first two films. While A Quiet Place (2018) was a horror creature feature mixed with a family drama, showing themes like responsibility, guilt, and sacrifice, Day One shifts the focus.

This film centers on a personal story of one woman’s struggle to reach a cherished place before her time runs out. Sam begins the story having lost interest in life, with her illness consuming her. However, when the aliens invade, her perspective changes, offering a refreshing take on the survival genre.

Nyong’o delivers a powerful performance as Sam, bringing both weariness and a genuine zest for life to her role. Her quest to fulfill her last wish amidst the alien chaos adds depth and emotional weight to the story. Quinn’s portrayal of Eric introduces a new dynamic to the film.

Sam is calm and composed, while Eric struggles with fear and uncertainty, creating a compelling contrast. This character-driven approach makes A Quiet Place: Day One more than just an alien movie; it becomes a study of human resilience and connection in the face of unimaginable fear.

While the film’s horror elements may not be as intense as those in its predecessors, it excels in its character development. The film may lack the same level of fright as the first two movies, but it offers a unique perspective on the alien invasion.

The excitement of seeing the aliens attack New York City on a grand scale is somewhat diminished, but the movie remains entertaining. Day One might not reach the heights of earlier monster movies set in New York City, but it offers a fresh take that stands out in the franchise.

Joseph Quinn and Lupita Nyong’o Give Excellent Performances in ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’

The film’s greatest strength is undoubtedly its cast. Lupita Nyong’o’s portrayal of Sam ensures that the focus remains on her journey rather than the chaos surrounding her. Nyong’o masterfully combines Sam’s hardened weariness with a determined pursuit of her last wish, making her character’s quest feel both urgent and poignant.

Joseph Quinn brings a rare tenderness to his role as Eric. His portrayal of vulnerability and fear adds depth to the film, highlighting the human need for connection in times of crisis. Together, Nyong’o and Quinn create a dynamic that drives the film towards its touching conclusion.

Alex Wolff also brings charisma and emotional depth to his role, despite his limited screen time. Djimon Hounsou makes a welcome return to his role from Part II, adding further depth to the cast. The chemistry between Nyong’o and Quinn is a standout feature, and their performances help rise the film beyond a typical alien invasion movie.

‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ has more to say about human nature than the promotional materials might suggest. By focusing on individual stories rather than broad survival themes, the film manages to carve out its own niche in both the franchise and the survival genre.

It may not be the most intense horror film or action movie, but its strong character development, effective script, and outstanding performances make it a notable entry in its genre.

A Quiet Place: Day One offers a refreshing and unique perspective within the franchise, distinguishing itself with a focus on deep character shown rather than just horror thrills. The film’s shift from the familiar family-centric drama of the previous installments to a character-driven narrative provides a fresh approach.

Lupita Nyong’o’s portrayal of Sam and Joseph Quinn’s role as Eric delivers powerful performances, bringing emotional depth and complexity to the story. While it might not match the intensity of its predecessors in terms of scares and tension, the film succeeds in its portrayal of human resilience and the quest for meaning in the face of chaos.

The setting of New York City adds a new dimension to the alien invasion, though it may not fully capitalize on the grandeur of the cityscape. Nevertheless, Day One stands out for its character-driven plot and engaging performances.

It highlights the importance of personal connections and the will to live even in the direst circumstances. As a result, A Quiet Place: Day One is a worthy addition to the franchise, offering fans a compelling and heartfelt narrative that broadens the scope of the series.
