Gluttony dies a rather ironic death in the Fullmetal Alchemist manga. He was one of the seven Homunculi created to act as the antagonist of the series. Although Gluttony doesn’t appear to be hostile, he can get pretty scary when it comes down to it. Although the two adaptations made from the manga vary in major ways, Gluttony’s character is almost the same as its original character. However, there are a few changes that we will address further.
The homunculus is given the name Gluttony after one of the Seven Cardinal sins in Roman Catholic Theology. Its meaning lies in overconsumption of eatables and drinkables that makes one lazy and wasteful. Gluttony is very similar to this. However, he devours is people or dead creatures. Sometimes by will and sometimes by order. He is seen hanging around Lust, his sister, and fellow homunculus. One may consider him to be the cutest homunculus because of his childish way of talking. Initially, he was a substitute for the Gate of Truth created by Father, however, this experiment failed. This experiment also gave this “cute” homunculus a scary true form. Going from being hostile and obeying whatever is asked of him to going bonkers in combat, one can only question: Will Gluttony win a fight? Or will Gluttony die? Let’s find out!
Gluttony, Fullmetal Alchemist (2003)
As mentioned, Gluttony’s personality is almost similar to the original Gluttony from the manga and 2009 anime adaptation. He usually is seen paired up with Lust. Although Gluttony is supposed to be villainous, he doesn’t really look down on mankind. He even respects and shows a significant amount of care for his siblings.
When Lust is killed by Wrath, Gluttony is so affected by it that he goes into the state of being depressed. Dante, affected and annoyed by this, decides to wipe out his memories, rendering him into a mindless creature that only lives to eat – the pure definition of Gluttony. After he turns into this monster being, he confronts Dante in an elevator. But turning his into this monster was probably a bad idea on her part as she is eaten by Gluttony in the end.
His Death:
In this adaptation, Gluttony isn’t really a failed Gate of Truth. He is rather a homunculus who turns into a giant monster with many limbs. His death isn’t shown in the anime series, but it is shown in the movie called “Conqueror of Shamballa”. This movie came out in 2005. This movie depicts the conclusion of the 2003 anime series.
After finding a messed-up Wrath near the grave of Izumi Curtis, Winry gives him an auto-mail upgrade. When Wrath encounters Al, he takes him to the underground city where Gluttony confronts them. Upon seeing Wrath, Gluttony “recalls” him as Lust’s killer and picks a fight with him. The only downside here is that Gluttony is now a huge creature.
During an intense battle, Gluttony lands a blow on Wrath, almost managing to kill him. Wrath then tells Al to use them as human sacrifices and open a gate using a transmutation circle. All obliges, killing both Wrath and Gluttony.
Gluttony, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009):
Here, Gluttony dies in a very tragic way. His death is so ruthless that one cannot help but pity Gluttony. Pride eats Gluttony as he needed more power. Ironic, isn’t it?
Gluttony is very childlike and is always asking for permission to eat people. He tends to have super senses, especially when it comes to smell. He can also regenerate himself whenever he is severely injured. Although he may not look like it, Gluttony also has the ability to be fast in combat. He is considered to be the most human” homunculus as he expresses his emotions.
His Death:
Gluttony doesn’t really get depressed after hearing about Lust’s death but gets furious when he finds out that Roy Mustang killed Lust. This causes him to open his “false gate” revealing his true form. After a while, Gluttony has drained off his energy. This causes him the incapability of reviving himself. It is then that Father takes Gluttony’s Philosopher’s Stone and then revives him. A move that would be fatal for Gluttony is assisting Pride in kidnapping Al.
During this time, he had to fight with Ling Yao as Greed and Lan Fan. In this battle, Gluttony again dies several times due to his injury. Upon noticing that he needs more power, Pride decides to eradicate Gluttony and take his powers. Pride then turns on the child-like Gluttony and kills him.
