Apple TV+, despite its limited catalog, is coming up with some out-of-the-box originals. Quite enough for a viewer to tune into the OTT space. Defending Jacob is one of those originals. Mark Bomback created the mini-series based on the 2012 novel of the same name by William Landay. Starring Chris Evans in the show was enough for Apple TV+ to garner some early attention. Let the story be another reason that left the audience shook. The series went on to receive huge praise, especially for the performance of the cast members. Despite some problems with length and pacing, the show brought enormous emotional weight to the story.
Defending Jacob tells the story of the Barber Family, whose 14-year-old son gets accused of murder. Thus, finding themselves in need of help. The finale of the show last year didn’t quite give many answers. It left fans wondering if Apple TV+ is interested in bringing the show back for another run. Thus, extending its storyline. So, here we are, taking a look at the show and figuring out will Defending Jacob come around for another season run. Even if not, we will theorize what we could’ve expected from it.
Is Defending Jacob Season 2 Happening?
To be clear, Defending Jacob is a mini-series, as stated by the creators of the show way back when it debuted. So the short answer is “No” for now. There is nothing much left behind, and overall the show covered every necessary point from Willaim Landay’s book in its first season run. Of course, the show’s end might be better than the book, but still, it needed answers. Especially with Jacob still alive and in a coma giving his life a second thought.
Honestly, Apple TV+ usually notices the success of the show and renews it right away. In some cases, even before another season debuts—for example, Apple TV+’s Servant. The show’s third season was announced before a second one even debuted. Looking at Defending Jacob now. It’s been a year since the show wrapped up—still, no word from the OTT platform. So a renewal of the show is highly unlikely. Like it said when it debuted, it’s a mini-series, after all.
The only reason Apple TV+ might bring back the show would be its popularity. This may lead the creators to take some drastic measures. Coming with some original narrative or introduce a new case altogether if they don’t want to extend the story.
What Happened In Defending Jacob Previously?
The finale of Defending Jacob saw the dismissal of Jacob’s case uncertainly. There is no judgment on whether he really has committed the murder or not. The finale focused on the Barber family taking a look at the troubled past until another tragic accident hits them. The episode ends with Jacob and Laurie hospitalized, with Laurie injured and Jacob in a coma. The ending moments saw Jacob taking a look at Andy’s life and realizing what he needed to do.
If Defending Jacob Comes Back, What Can We Expect?
If somehow there is a slight chance of Apple TV+ taking a shot on the show, we might see the creators expanding the story. Probably Jacob’s realization at the end of the first season gives him the motive to help himself and not give up. Another plot could be him really coming out of a coma and embracing a new life keeping the past behind. Well, that won’t be easy anyway. Going to college, always being stared at with suspicion. So that would make an intriguing storyline telling an “innocent or not” kid’s struggle to fit back into society.
On the other hand, Apple TV+ can also withdraw the story altogether. It may bring in a new case with a new cast and tell a new story altogether. Of course, similar to Jacob’s, where a defense is really in much need of help after accusations thrown at them.

The Cast We Can Expect If The Story Gets Extended
Of course, we can expect a number of notable names if Apple Tv+ intends to extend the show. Let’s start with the Barber family, which may include the main attraction as in Chris Evans reprising his role as Andy Barber. Joining Chris could be Michelle Dockery as Laurie Barber, Jaeden Martell as Jacob Barber, and of course J. K. Simmons as William “Bloody Billy” Barber.
The other cast members who could join in an extended storyline would be Cherry Jones as Joanna Klein, Betty Gabriel as Pam Duffy, Pablo Schreiber as Neal Logiudice, and finally, Sakina Jaffrey as Lynn Canavan.
