John Lewis was born on February 21, 1940, near Troy, Alabama. He was born in a family of 10 children, and his parents were sharecroppers. Rural Alabama was a very poor place, and Lewis’ family had very few books. His early education took place in a little building named Rosenwald School, which was supported by the community. It was the only school they had, and Lewis had a really good teacher who encouraged him to keep reading.
The place where he lived was populated with the black population, so he had never interacted with the whites much. It was not until later, in 1965 when he was 16 years old, that he first felt the fangs of racism. He had gone to the public library with some of his brothers and sisters to get a library card, only to be denied. The fact being that the library was only for the whites, not for the colored. After that, he knew what he wanted to do in life.

J R Lewis was the 3rd chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) from 1963 to 1966. He married Lillian Miles in 1968, who later died after a long-term illness in 2012 at the age of 73. The politician met his demise on 17th July 2020 after battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He was 80. Actor Stephan James played the character of John Lewis in the 2014 film ‘Selma’. He had been awarded a list of honors some of which included the Wallenberg Medal, the Profile in Courage Award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Four Freedoms Award.
John and Lillian are both survived by the son they had adopted when he was two months old. They had both named him after themselves. He got his first name by inheriting his father’s first name and mother’s surname, John-Miles Lewis.
