We know that Shinji came across many phenomenal characters in his journey. Like when he met a fellow Evangelion pilot, Asuka Langley Sohryu, who was a prodigy and which made Shiji jealous of her. Both had a bitter and rival kind of relationship between them. However, as the show continued, we see the characters grow closer to each other. Further, developing romantic and sexual emotions for each other. We even witness some weird and awkward sexual interactions between Shinji and Asuka throughout the series. We even see Shinji worrying about Ashuka when she drowns in depression after losing to a powerful angel. After Asuka went into a coma, SEELE sent a replacement Kaworu Nagisa to NERV for piloting Unit-02. Kaworu’s entry into Shinji’s life was like a ray of hope, as his most friends were either dead or in an unreachable state, which left Shinji in a pit of loneliness. Soon Kaworu and Shinji became excellent friends, and both shared a bond with each other. Further, Shinjigot was more attracted towards Kaworu because he cared for him when he was alone and also taught Shinji to love himself. However, Kawore later revealed that he was the last angel and, in reality, Adam’s incarnation in a human form. But he let Shinji kill him in their fight.
