To The Manor Born Filming Locations
The exterior shots of this BBC TV sitcom were shot at Cricket House, located in Somerset, Cricket St. Thomas, England. Firstly, the name of this location comes from the Anglo-Saxon vocable “Cruc” which means “hill”. This manor is as old as 1086 when the early registers adjudicated it to the Count of Martin as he was paying some taxes to the King of England for six hides.
Since the 11th Century, the De Cricket family has held the deed of the property. But it changed hands since. The remaining house is a Georgian Manorial House built in 1786 by Alexander Hood. In the show, the manor is called “Grantleigh Manor”. As a fun piece of trivia, did you know that Peter Spences’ father-in-law owned that house? In case the name sounds familiar, if you’re a To The Manor Born fan, he’s the writer of the sitcom! Now we know how the showrunners managed to record the program so easily in such a coveted piece of land!
The BBC Television Center
In White City, West London, the BBC Television Centre (TVC) is a complex of buildings which served as the corporation’s headquarters from 1960 until 2013. BBC Studioworks returned to the site in 2017 to use three studios for television production, following a renovation. The Scenery Block was originally occupied by BBC employees in 1953, and it was inaugurated on June 29th, 1960. One of the most well-known facilities of its kind, it has featured in numerous BBC shows. Studio 1 and the central ring of the building are both Grade II listed structures.
Television Centre provided the majority of the BBC’s national tv and radio news production, while the Broadcast Centre at 201 Wood Lane, owned by Red Bee Media, provided the majority of recorded television. Live studio events and channeling of domestic and international sporting events was handled by Television Centre before being sent to the Broadcast Centre for dissemination. It was in this place where they shot several interior shots and scenes of To The Manor Born. Sadly, the BBC ceased broadcasting from that building back in 2013, and later, they sold the building to some property developers who turned it into a housing development. So, these were the places where they filmed this beloved BBC sitcom from the late 1970s. If you’re ever in London or in Somerset, take a stroll around!
