For the sake of being close to his friend, John decides to relocate. He finds a job and rents a bed in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kelly, who really are struggling financially because of Mr. Kelly’s hip injury.
John makes an effort to befriend Margaret, the teenage daughter of the Kellys, who resents having to share her room with him. Jake Blount, an alcoholic vagabond, and Dr. Copeland, a bitter African American doctor who is dying of lung cancer, are also among the people he makes friends with. When Dr. Copeland sees a deaf and mute patient, John assists by translating. Spiros has been dead over several weeks, as John discovers when he pays him a visit. John comes back to his room after paying a final visit to the gravesite of his friend, where he pacifies and repeatedly apologizes in sign language for his actions.
