Where is the Movie Hoosiers Filmed?

The 1986 American sports movie Hoosiers is probably America’s favorite sports-based movie. An underdog story, the movie has all the elements that would make a movie stand out from its contemporaries. The movie is quite aesthetically pleasing too. Hence one should ask and rightly so, where was the movie Hoosiers filmed? What are the shooting locations of the movie?

An emotionally turbulent sports movie with the likes of Gene Hackman, Dennis Hopper, and Barbara Hershey in the main roles, Hoosiers is a classic in American cinema. Directed by David Anspaugh (this was his directorial debut in feature films. Talk about impressive debuts and written by Angelo Pizzo, the film is loosely based on the story of Milan High School, then Indiana State Champions (1954) who participated in the State Championships. The film follows the rural town of Hickory, Indiana, and how the town team with all the odds stacked against them makes it to the state championships.

The film has received critical acclaim at its finest. Dennis Hooper won an Oscar for his role in the movie. He played the town drunk who loved basketball. Mr. Hooper played the character with all the nuance it needed. American music composer Jerry Goldsmith also won the academy award for the background score of the movie. Not only this, in the year 2001, the movie was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.

So moving on, we would move on to the main question i.e. where was the movie Hoosiers filmed? What are the shooting locations of the movie?

The Huskers

Hoosiers’ Filming Location: Where is the movie Filmed?

Talking about the movie’s primary locations, the movie, just like fictionally being based in the state of Indiana, is also shot primarily in the various parts of the state of Indiana. The movie’s opening credits are shot in the town of Terhune in Indiana. The town inhabited 65 residents at that time. The basketball and sports scenes of the movies are shot in various basketball gymnasiums distributed in various parts of the state at that time.

Firstly, the main gymnasium for the Hickory town in the movie is the 1921 gymnasium based in the South Western region of Henry County in Knightstown. Just a fun fact – the team is known as Huskers in the movie. So we can say Huskers’ home court is based in a gym in Henry County in Knightstown.

The sectional games in the movie take place in a 56-year-old gym seated with 800 seats based in Brownsburg in North Hendricks County. The exact address is 315 E. College Avenue Brownsburg, Northern Hendricks County. The Huskers’ away games in the movie are shot in the Cedar Knob Gym. The gymnasium in the real life is located in St. Philip Nedri Catholic School, Downtown. It is located in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The other two types of games played in the movie i.e. the regional games and the state finals games are played at (respectively): a 2200 seat Memorial Gymnasium at 315 North, Lebanon Street and a 15000 seats (largest gymnasium in the United States up and until 1950) gymnasium called Butler Fieldhouse, located inside Butler University campus in the city of Indianapolis. All the aftermentioned gymnasiums are more or less closed. The cities and counties have changed and numerous new venues have been constructed since then where the sports take place primarily.

The movie’s town scenes are shot in a small town with 400 people called New Richmond located in Montgomery County. The movie is based in a town called Downtown Hickory.

Hoosiers and what makes it a classic?

After 35 years, the movie is still palpable and relatable. The movie, on the back of its performances, has connected viewers and critics, alike. The people get in the groove of the movie’s small-town caricature and the small-town values. Hackman gave a performance which is in fact, great. So was the performance of Hopper, who played the town drunk who also happens to be the father of one of the players.

The long line of buses with their lights on, pep rallies, and people clapping and cheering; the film really gets the emotions and adrenaline both running like the blood in the veins. And who can forget arguably one of the greatest speeches in the history of sports movies:

36 years later, it is one of the finest sports dramas.

Forget about the crowds, the size of the school, their fancy uniforms, and remember what got you here. Focus on the fundamentals that we’ve gone over time and time again. And most important, don’t get caught up thinking about winning or losing. If you put your effort and concentration into playing to your potential, be the best that you can be, I don’t care what the scoreboard says. At the end of the game, you’re going to be the winner!

You cannot be a cinephile and not watch this movie.
