The Comancheros is the last film directed by the legendary director Michael Curtiz. It got adapted from Paul Wellman’s novel (same name) in 1952. Comancheros is an American Western-type film starring John Wayne, Ina Balin, and Stuart Whitman. The American movie is pretty wild & wooly, with not a moment of seriousness in it! It contains a lot of fun and humor throughout the film. There is not a moment of exaggeration with every actor performing their role to perfection.
The Comancheros premiered on November 1, 1961. Michael Curtiz had a terminal illness before he started directing the film. Comancheros was his final film, as he had mentioned it in the start. It was a landmark that placed Curtiz as one of the greatest directors of all time.
Curtiz perished before he could not finish the film. But John Wayne took over and completed the movie. He forced the crew not to credit him for it because it was all Michael Curtiz’s magic. That is the mark of a true legend! Comancheros supporting roles had veterans who had played roles in cowboy films. They did not get credit for some reason. The uncredited actors are Harry Carey Jnr, Bob Steele, and Guinn “Big Boy” Williams. Produced by George Sherman, the film runs for one hour, forty-seven mins. 20th Century Fox assisted in the distribution. John Wayne’s Comancheros grossed $6 Million worldwide.
John Wayne has to capture a dangerous convict at the start of the film. After he gets hold of him, they face the Comancheros. That is where the fun begins!
