Ever since the audience watched Hunter Killer, they have been wondering where it was filmed. The movie is about the US Navy and submarine bases. It circles around a captain called Joe Glass. The film is an action thriller, and we know action thrillers are very popular. It came out on 26th October 2018 and is directed by Donovan Marsh. Hunter Killer is written by Arne Schmidt and Jamie Boss. It is based on a novel that came out in 2012. The novel’s name is Firing Point, and it was authored by Don Keith and George Wallace.

Now since the movie includes a lot of underwater scenes, submarine, and coastal scenes, fans have been wondering whether an actual sea was used to film the movie. Well, no. What Is Hunter Killer About?

The movie is about a captain who is called Joe Glass. He is assigned to command the USS Arkansas submarine to investigate and find when the USS Tampa Bay submarine loses touch with the American base. The submarine is navigating in Russian seas. It is discovered, as well as a Russian submarine that has sunk with survivors inside. However, they are later attacked by a Russian submarine that was hiding beneath an iceberg. Captain Joe and his team destroy the enemy. The survivors, including a Russian Captain called Andropov, are then rescued.

After that, we see that a commando commanded by Lieutenant Bill Beaman is dispatched and sent to observe a Russian base. He discovers that a coup is underway, with Russian Defense Minister Dmitriy Durov deposing Russian President Nikolai Zakarin. Now Beaman and Glass are tasked with rescuing Zakarin in order to avoid a nuclear war. However, Captain Andropov’s assistance is the only way for the USS Arkansas to reach the Russian base waters. Now the question is, will he help Captain Glass?

The filming of ‘Hunter Killer’ took place in London, U.K. It basically took three studios across London to complete the filming of the movie. One of the studios where the filming took place was Ealing Studios. It developed interior sets of Hunter Killer. The production made submarine after having the approval of the US Navy. To replicate the movement of the sea, the sets were mounted on a gimbal. One of the producers of the movie said that the US navy was gracious enough to let the creators reveal the submarine they used.

The production designer spent some time with the Navy designer. The producer said that he came back with extraordinary details after learning from Navy designers and engineers. The Navy helped him build submarines for the movie. The production wanted the design to be so perfect that any man working in the Navy could tell which submarine it was.

Talking about the exterior set for the scenes, it was built in Pinewood Studios’ water tank. It is an 806,000-gallon water tank. Along with that, the underwater shots were filmed at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in a separate water tank. Aside from London, exterior filming of the movie’s Russian Polyarny base was filmed at a Bulgarian Naval installation. It is in Varna on the Black Sea coast. The Russian base’s interiors were filmed at Nu Boyana Film Studios. It is Sofia, which is Bulgaria’s Captial.

Some Fun Facts About The Movie

The protagonist of the movie was played by Gerard Butler. He went aboard the USS Houston from May 6th through May 9th with the director for research purposes. In order to make the script and movie more realistic and authentic, both of them noted down several characteristics of an actual working submarine and its crew.

The movie was originally planned to be filmed in Alaska. The Russian Naval base during the winter was going to be filmed in Whittier, a maritime town in Alaska. However, due to some issues like a lack of lodging for the crew, the production was forced to relocate. The script was also reworked due to filming issues.

Also, the director and Gerard Butler traveled to Pearl Harbor before the movie even began its production. They boarded a Virginia-class nuclear submarine for a three-day tour to get an idea about how they work. It is commendable to see how the creators of cinema travel and research for their project. We, as an audience, get to experience so much in two hours with these talented creators working so hard behind the scenes. It sure takes a lot of hardworking to decide the filming locations, and it also comes with a lot of issues. However, the talented production teams never give up and provide us with great cinematography.
