Who is Mai Zenin? What anime is she from? What is her backstory, and why did she hate her sister Maki Zenin? Mai Zenin was a secondary character in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime series. She is a second-year student at Kyoto Jujutsu High School. Mai was a brusque and direct individual who had no qualms about speaking up her mind. She insulted Nobara and Megumi upon meeting them, as well as their deceased buddy, Itadori Yuji, just for the sake of a school rivalry. She is an impartial person as even her sister, and Maki is not pardoned from her wrath.

Backstory
Mai and Maki were twin sisters, with her being the younger child of the Zenin family of sorcerers. Gege Akutami, the mangaka of Jujutsu Kaisen, has mentioned in the Jujutsu Kaisen Official Fanbook that Mai had enrolled in Kyoto Jujutsu High as a result of her family lineage. Mai had always come to depend upon Maki since childhood as she had always been terrified of curses. Mai, who never wanted to become a sorcerer, came to hate Maki as the latter left the family for her aspirations. It was due to this decision taken by Maki that Mai was also forced into the family profession by the head of the clan.
Relationship with sister, Maki Zenin
Mai’s immaturity and horrible attitude were a result of her trauma of being forced into the profession of Jujutsu Sorcery. The twin sisters had been a subject to sexism in the Zenin household. Not only that but they were often subjected to mockery as they possessed little to no cursed energy. Thus, neither of them was able to gain any jujutsu ability from the Zenin clan. Although Mai had made peace with her situation, Maki wanted a better life for herself. Thus, Maki broke off her promise to Mai that she would never leave her, to go off to become a Jujutsu sorcerer. As a consequence, Mai had to follow suit to avoid horrible treatment from her family and came to pursue the very profession that was the cause of her nightmares.
Initially, Mai blamed Maki for all the horror that she was going through. The love that she had for her sister had turned into resentment. Mai believed that Maki was the cause of her struggle as she would never have had to become a sorcerer if the latter hadn’t ever left the family. Though, beneath all the resentment, Mai still loved her sister very much, as was apparent from her sacrifice for Maki.
Jujutsu Technique
Mai was a level 3 sorcerer with decent jujutsu abilities. She used a revolver with bullets infused with cursed energy to take down her opponents. Despite behaving as if she was stronger than her sister, Mai, in reality, was actually no match for Maki, who has superior physical capabilities. Her cursed technique also had strong limitations, with her only being able to use it once per day. Mai was shown to use a Six-Shooter Revolver so as to fool her opponents into miscalculating her actual limits. Once they thought she was defeated, she used her cursed technique to generate an unexpected seventh round after depleting her first six.
How did Mai die?
Mai dies in chapter 149 of the manga as Maki and Mai were abandoned to die in a chamber filled with curses by their father. Mai attempts to save Maki by giving her the cursed energy that she needs. She thus dies in a heartbreaking way as she tells Maki her dying wish for the whole Zenin family to be destroyed. She asks Maki to carry out her final wish with the power that she has given her. Mai’s sacrifice leads Mai to become many times stronger than she originally was.
