Superhero movies have arguably defined the start of the 21st century. The genre is at its peak and the biggest box-office driver these days. There has been a lot of discussion and debate around the “superhero fatigue” among audiences. But judging by the numbers superhero movies continue to generate, those discussions point to only one answer. We are not tired of the superhero genre just yet. And we don’t seem to, any time soon. Although, with the drought of a year that 2020 was, the genre sure came to a halt. It was revitalized this year with Zack Snyder’s Justice League cut and Marvel’s Wandavision, and the ongoing TFATWS. And it looks like 2021 is going to be the opposite of the previous year. This year is sprawling with exciting and huge superhero movies.
Marvel is going ballistic on superhero content with multiple theatrical and digital releases this year. Warner Brothers Pictures and Sony Pictures Entertainment are also following suit. Then there are also a couple of less popular superhero properties hitting the big screens. So without any further ado, let’s get straight into it and traverse through the most anticipated superhero movies releasing in 2021.
Black Widow — One of the Most Anticipated Superhero Movies of 2021
A standalone Black Widow movie has been long overdue, and fans have been longing for one for a very long. Back at the start of 2020, that wish was looking to come true. However, the COVID-19 pandemic arrived and forced all of us to use the word “unprecedented” one too many times. The “unprecedented” also affected a lot of movie releases, inflicting major changes to the Hollywood industry as a whole. Black Widow was going to serve our never-ending superhero movie craving on May 1, 2020. The film is going to explore Natasha’s past and her family before the Avengers. The star cast includes Scarlet Johansson, Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz, and David Harbour in the lead.
We’re in for a high-octane action delight with some crazy characters, including the Red Guardian. We will see how Natasha became the Black Widow and then her escape from the Russian government. The film will show her during the past and present with her going up against the Taskmaster and the government. The indie filmmaker Cate Shorthand is directing what will be the first movie in MCU’s phase four. After the delay in its release due to the pandemic, it was uncertain as to when it will finally release. Well, now it’s time, and we’re finally getting it simultaneously in theatres and on Disney+, on July 9, 2021.

The Suicide Squad — A Promising Reboot?
After the tragic and massively disappointing Suicide Squad film of 2016, WB nearly gave up on a sequel. However, it is now going to have a kind of a reboot with 2021 The Suicide Squad. There are going to be many of the characters from the original reprising their roles. But there are also going to be many new additions to the cast. What’s the most promising prospect, however, is that James Gunn is donning the director hat for this one. James Gunn had directed the two Guardians of the Galaxy films that have received significant critical and commercial success. So it’s safe to say that the sequel seems to be in safe and creative hands. Another exciting prospect is the immense cast this film has. It seems like everyone is going to appear in this film about psychotic super-villain-turned saviors.
The major cast includes Margot Robbie reprising her role of Harley Quinn. Joel Kinnaman is returning as Rick Flag, with Jai Courteney returning as The Boomerang. Also returning are Karen Fukuhara and Viola Davis reprising their roles from the original. The new additions include Jon Cena donning the role of Peacemaker, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, and Peter Capaldi as Thinker. We’re also going to see comedian Flula Borg as Javelin, Steve Agee as King Shark, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man. Then there’s Sylvester Stallone, Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker, Taika Waititi, Sean Gunn, Alice Braga, Storm Reid, and Daniela Malchior. Suffice it to say; this superhero movie appears to be stacked with an incredible cast and packed with crazy-fun action. The filming and production have wrapped, and there have been two trailer drops so far. The Suicide Squad is going to release on August 8, 2021.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage
Venom was a big surprise hit for Sony Pictures, grossing over $800 million at the box office. So it was a no-brainer for the Tom Hardy-led superhero movie to get a sequel. The sequel, titled Venom: Let There Be Carnage, is going to build upon the post-credits in the first one. Woody Harrelson is going to don the role of the brutal Carnage, the enemy of Venom. If the leaked set photos are any indication, we’re in for another wild ride, folks. The cast includes Tom Hardy, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris, and JK Simmons.
Also, with the Sony-Marvel Spiderman deal, the friendly neighborhood superhero can’t be ruled out just yet. With Tom Hardy bringing his wacky and frantic energy and Woody emulating the “psycho,” you bet it’s gonna be Carnage! Like many other films, Venom 2 was also going originally release in 2020. But the pandemic struck, and its October 2, 2020 release date was delayed. The film will have strong competition from the 9th Fast & Furious franchise when it comes out in June 2021. Venom: Let There Be Carnage is now going to release on June 25, 2021.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Shang-Chi is finally getting his standalone film in the MCU phase 4. This is a big and important change for MCU and superhero movies. That’s because Shang-Chi is going to be MCU’s first-ever film with an Asian actor playing the lead superhero. The comic book character of Shang-Chi was created by writer Steve Englehart in the early 1970s. Shang-Chi was created when Marvel acquired rights to the villain Fu Manchu from the TV series Kung Fu. Shang-Chi is the son of Fu Manchu and learns martial arts from him. However, when he learns that his father is an evil villain, he turns against him and becomes the titular superhero. Shang-Chi is going to follow the path traveled by Marvel’s Black Panther. The film is sure to leave an important cultural impact on the Asians living in America and everywhere else too.
Marvel Cinematic Universe has many films doing colossal numbers in many countries. And a major part of MCU’s target audience lives in Asia. It’s a big feeling, seeing your people being represented in worldwide blockbusters. And films like these can do just that, provided they do the job right. Director of Short Term 12, Destin Daniel Cretton, is going to direct the film. Simu Liu is playing the titular superhero while Tony Leung is playing the villain Mandarin. After the Mandarin twist at the end of Ironman 3, many fans were disappointed. Mandarin was one of the most anticipated characters, and its fan felt robbed when he turned out to be a fake. That’s what makes Shang-Chi exciting, too, for we’ll finally get real Mandarin on screen. The cast also includes Awkwafina, Florian Munteanu, Michelle Yeoh, Ronny Chieng, and Ben Kingsley. Shang-Chi is going to release on September 23, 2021.
Eternals — One of the Most Interesting Superhero Movies of 2021
Eternals is one of the most exciting and anticipated superhero movies from the MCU phase 4 roster. Many things are going on for the film and the hype surrounding it. For one, its direction is going to be at the helm of Chloé Zhao. Chloé is a Chinese filmmaker who has won multiple critical acclaims and awards for her indie films. Her recent film Nomadland, starring Frances McDormand, is on the award-snagging spree. It will be so interesting watching what elements Chloé brings to the table for a superhero movie like Eternals. It’s mainly interesting because the idea that such a director is directing a mainstream movie is very wild. What kind of sensibilities is she going to bring to the table? How is it going to differ from the rest of the MCU movies?
Questions like these are what make us so incredibly hyped for this movie. Eternals are a group of superpowered and nearly immortal beings that live on Earth, impacting and influencing civilizations. Over the centuries, they’ve lost the memories of what they were. But following the events of Avengers: Endgame, they’ve remembered their purpose and reunite to protect humans from enemies called Deviants. Another equally enthralling aspect is the ridiculous cast of big Hollywood names to immensely talented actors. The cast includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harrington as Dane Whitman, with Angelina Jolie as Thena. With such faces and talent, you can’t help but be excited about the project.
Spider-Man: No Way Home
The friendly neighborhood superhero is returning with a web full of crazy multiversal crossovers. The next sequel is going to see him get entangled in a grand story crossing timelines and universes. Homecoming director Jon Watts is returning as the director with Chris McKenna and Erik Simmers writing the screenplay. No Way Home is among the most hyped upcoming Marvel projects. It has to do with the wild news about major casting decisions. It has been reported that the cast is going to include Jamie Foxx as Electro and Alfred Molina as Doc Ock. Jamie Foxx has played Electro in The Amazing Spiderman 2, while Molina played Doc Ock in the original Spiderman 2. Fans haven’t been able to keep their cool ever since these details have come to light. The prospect of revisiting these characters is exciting enough already, but it also means we will also see other Spider-Men.
There have been rumors about the inclusion of Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and Emma Stone. This makes it very obvious that the plot is going to involve a multiverse full of characters crossing over. And that’s more than enough to make fans empty their pockets at the cinemas when the movie arrives. Multiverse seems to be the next thing that’s going to be central to the grander MCU narrative moving forward. Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness is, as the name suggests, going to involve a lot of multiversal hullabaloos. We’ve all watched the craziness a multiverse crossover can bring in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The same kind of craziness but with live-action stars is extremely exciting, to say the least. Spider-Man: No Way Home is releasing on December 17, 2021.
Samaritan — An Original Superhero Movie
Samaritan is an odd-one-out here. It is the only original superhero movie to release in 2021. The film is going to star Sylvester Stallone in the lead role. Stallone is also starring in another superhero movie this year — DC’s The Suicide Squad by James Gunn. It seems Stallone has acquired a taste for the superhero genre. And we’re not complaining. The megastar can carry a film solely on his star-power, as proved by many of his films. The 74-years old star doesn’t show any signs of aging and slowing down as he continues to kick ass on the big screen. We can’t wait for what Stallone has to offer in this new and original superhero film.
Reports have suggested that the film is going to be a dark and more realistic take on superheroes. The plot will revolve around a young boy who finds a superhero presumed dead for a long time. Stallone is playing the lead superhero, and the details so far suggest that it’s going to be like a The Boys-type affair. And you could never go wrong with the gore-filled and dark spin on superheroes. The superhero movie market is saturated with superhero movies based on comics. So it’s refreshing to see a change for once in the form of an original superhero movie. Samaritan has Julius Avery at the helm of directing. Julius Avery has directed the entertaining Nazi-Zombie flick Overlord (2018). And if this movie is anything like Overlord, spilling guts and blood is going to be a frequent sight. Samaritan will release on June 4, 2021.
Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins
2021 is going to see the G.I. Joe franchise returning to the big screen. There have been two G.I. Joe movies so far, and both have received mixed reviews. Although this one seems to take a different turn from the usual G.I. Joe entries. As the name suggests, this one is a spin-off that’s based wholly on the character Snake Eyes. The film is going to explore the origins of Snake Eyes. The silent assassin is one of the most beloved members of the Hasbro toy and animated series team. With the kind of disappointing flicks we’ve gotten so far from the franchise, fans are itching for a win. If the makers do it right, this one can be the first genuinely good and successful hit in the series. Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins will release on October 22, 2021.
