Plot

The White Lotus’ story details a week in the life of vacationers as they relax and rejuvenate in paradise. As each day passes, a darker complexity emerges in the picture-perfect travelers, the hotel’s cheerful employees, and the idyllic locale itself. We see how the rich and powerful exploit those who aren’t, just for their own enjoyment. The plot leaves us thinking about how the hotel staff must feel when obnoxious people go on vacations, and they have to cater to every whim and fancy of their guests. The series follows the individual stories of the hotel staff as well as the guests and shows us how dark and complex everyone can actually be underneath all the façade.

The White Lotus Season 1 Recap

Let’s begin with Armond, who is the manager of the resort and a recovering drug addict who has been clean for five years. Although he begins with a bright and sunny disposition, after looking after every need of the privileged and quite frankly terrible guests, he begins to unravel. He has a conflict with one guest, in particular, Shane Patton, which eventually causes him to lose his job, relapse, and finally die. Now coming to Tanya McQuoid, a troubled woman whose mother recently died, and she has come to spread her mother’s ashes in the ocean. She strikes up a friendship with Belinda, the resort’s spa manager, and offers to finance Belinda’s own spa. Belinda gets very excited with this business offer and even makes a business proposal for Tanya, only to have her back out at the last moment.

Mossbacher Family

Next, we move on to the Mossbacher family. The family consists of Nicole, who is a CFO of a search engine, and Mark’s wife, Mark, her husband, who is initially dealing with a “health crisis,” their socially awkward son Quinn and their sardonic daughter Olivia, who is a college sophomore. They are also accompanied by Paula, Olivia’s friend from college. Saying that this family is highly dysfunctional would be an understatement. Over the course of their vacation, Mark finds out that his father was homosexual and died from AIDS instead of cancer which he originally believed. He also confesses to his son that he had an affair once in his past, for which Nicole gets furious with him. The pair, however, reconcile and come closer together by the end of the vacation when he “saves her” from being harmed by a thief.

Olivia and Paula.

Olivia and her frenemy Paula have their own set of problems when Paula has a summer affair with one of the hotel staff, and Olivia gets jealous. Also, after Paula finds out that her new boyfriend, a native of Hawaii, lost the land the resort was built on, which originally belonged to his family, she helps him steal a pair of super expensive bracelets from the locker to pay for their legal fees. Sadly, however, he is later caught by the police, and Olivia finds out but says nothing to protect Paula. Lastly, there is Quinn, who is actually probably the most normal one in the family who, despite being socially awkward, makes friends, falls in love with Hawaii, and decides to stay back after the vacation. He leaves the airport after his family boards the plane and goes back to his new friends, who happen to be Hawaiian paddlers.

Rachel and Shane

Next, we come to Rachel, a Journalist and newlywed to Shane Patton, a real estate agent, and her husband. The pair are on their honeymoon when Shane becomes obsessed with the fact that their beautiful room is not the one they had booked. He spends his entire honeymoon on a mission to destroy Armond, which he eventually does. After Armond completely breaks and sneaks into his room to “shit” in his luggage Shane stabs and kills him by mistake, thinking that he is an intruder. Meanwhile, Rachel suffers from an existential crisis thinking that she made a mistake by marrying Shane so quickly and eventually breaks after Kitty, his mother, arrives on their honeymoon. The pair, however, seem to reconcile at the end when she arrives at the airport and decides to stay with him.

The White Lotus Season 2 Release Date

Following the critical acclaim and viewership numbers the show received, it was renewed as an anthology series, which will tell the stories of a different group of vacationers during their stay at a different White Lotus property. HBO announced the renewal in August 2021. They said, “The next chapter of The White Lotus leaves Hawaii behind and follows a different group of vacationers as they jet to another White Lotus property and settle in temporarily with its inhabitants.” Judging by the fact that the second season was just recently confirmed, we don’t think production has begun yet. Producers have not even picked a new location yet, so we probably won’t get the new season this year. It will release maybe in the beginning of next year.

What To Expect From The White Lotus Season 2?

Considering that this is going to be an anthology series, we don’t really know what to expect. The new season will most certainly feature a new cast, most of whom have already been cast. In an interview creator, Mike White said, ” I don’t think you can credibly have the same guests on the same vacation again. But maybe it could be a Marvel Universe type thing, where some of them would come back.” There are rumors of Jennifer Coolidge’s character, Tanya McQuoid, making a comeback in season 2. The new season already has some amazing stars cast like Michael Imperioli, aka Christopher Moltisanti in The Sopranos, who is going to play a man traveling with his elderly father and recent college graduate son. Parks and Recreation star Aubrey Plaza has also been cast to play a young woman vacationing with family and friends.

The location will also be different as the season is going to be set in a different White Lotus property. HBO said, “It would have to be a different hotel, like, say, The White Lotus san Tropez or something, or even White Lotus Kyoto, which would be fun too, because we could get into culture clash ideas and stuff like that.” One thing we can be sure of is, regardless of the cast or location, the new season will be one hell of a roller-coaster ride, just like the first one was.
