HBO’s adaptation of the Philip Roth novel in 2020 as a limited series generated a lot of viewer traction. After the series ran its course, the question is valid: Is The Plot Against America Season 2 happening? Firstly, suppose you are not familiar with this series. In that case, it tells a dystopic story where Charles Lindbergh wins the election against Franklin Delano Roosevelt and keeps the United States from entering World War II. Moreover, the story gets told from the eyes of a New Jersey Jewish family that sees the rise of antisemitism and nazi sympathies in America.
The Plot Against America stars Winona Ryder, Zoe Kazan, and John Turturro. Additionally, it was developed by Ed Burns and David Simon, who decided to adapt Philp Roth’s book. If you saw Amazon’s “The Man in The High Castle,” this show might give you the same vibe. So, what’s the story regarding this HBO dystopic show’s renewal status? Join us here at Otakukart to find out all about it.
The Plot Against America Season 2 Renewal Status & Release Date
The Plot Against America Season 2 is up for grabs. Firstly, season one concluded with a logical turn point in the plotline. With Charles Lindbergh going missing in his aircraft, the US had to call an emergency vote. The people must go about electing Roosevelt and somehow managing to tip the scales of the war in America’s favor. Secondly, right from the trailer, HBO says that The Plot Against America is a limited series. But HBO sometimes extends the plot beyond the script. You see, when “Big Little Lies” came out, they intended it to be a standalone series. And then they decided to renew it. In consequence, there’s a slim chance that HBO might do the same with this show. If HBO decides to renew this show, it might drop sometime in late 2022.
If you want to watch The Plot Against America, then you must go to HBO. You won’t find The Plot Against America anywhere else because it’s an HBO exclusive. Luckily, the premium platform is globally accessible. Firstly, you can get HBO Max directly. Or you can subscribe to it via add-on on top of other platforms like Hulu or Amazon Prime Video. This adds an extra cost to your bill. But it opens up a great variety of programs, movies, and series for your viewing pleasure.
The Plot Against America Season 1 Recap
This series takes inspiration from a book written by Philip Roth. Firstly, it tells a story from a Jewish family’s perspective located in New Jersey. It began in 1939 in an alternate story, when the political climate of the United States was divided between cooperating with Great Britain against the Germans or staying neutral. What happened, in reality, was that Roosevelt was reluctant to give Winston Churchill military aid until December 7, 1941. That’s when the Japanese invaded Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. But in this timeline, none of that happens.
What we get instead is a six-episode dystopia where much in the same fashion as Amazon’s “The Man In The High Castle,” the Jewish family must adapt to a country that embraces the other side. Things kick off when Charles Lindbergh gets elected as President instead of Roosevelt. In consequence, Lindbergh’s sympathies towards the Nazis become evident. And that begins to shape and morph the country. For the Jewish family that’s the main protagonists of this story, the Levins, it is now a matter of survival.
The Levins are quickly affected by Lindbergh’s victory since antisemitism grows in popularity among the broader population throughout his administration. Moreover, the Levins, formerly a prosperous and happy Jewish family, succumb to political pressure and disintegrate as the country descends towards fascism, making life a living misery for all Jews.
Alvin, one of the Levins, goes out to eliminate the Nazis in Europe. Sandy, Bess, and Herman Levin’s older son attend a camp that “Americanizes” him and pushes him against his family, while Evelyn, Bess’ sister, has a sexual engagement with a Lindbergh supporter, further increasing upheaval in the Levin household. The Levins are on a mission to prevent their world from collapsing.
Why was Rabbi Bengelsdorf Supportive of Lindbergh Despite His Antisemitism?
The conclusion also addresses the issue of why the rabbi was so loyal to Lindbergh despite his overtly anti-Semitic views. Evelyn informs Bess that Lindbergh’s child was abducted by the Nazis, not murdered. The boy was raised in Berlin as part of the Hitler Youth in order to use him against Lindbergh. They were pressuring him to support Nazi policy in the United States.
Since there is no other corroborating evidence, and we know how delusional the rabbi can be, it’s possible that he invented this hypothesis to persuade himself that Lindbergh was a nice man. He additionally thinks that Lindbergh’s disappearance was caused by the Germans, who wanted him to do their bidding despite his best efforts to oppose their demands. However, as we can see from Alvin’s perspective, this is not the case.
Lindbergh Dissappears and Rabbi Bengelsdorf’s Demise
The upheaval increases tenfold after Lindbergh’s disappearance. The riots threaten to split the country apart, and the Levin family’s discontent approaches a breaking point. It gets even worse for the good Rabbi Bengelsdorf, who’d already previously been a fervent admirer of Lindbergh. He is completely cut off from the White House, and the FBI eventually arrests him.
Among the big Jewish community, his reputation has been completely ruined, and anti-Semites have labeled him as a negative Jewish influencer on the President. Evelyn reaches out to Bess for assistance, but it is too late. A few months later, Presidential elections are held ahead of schedule, and the Levin family waits for the results with bated breath.
Lindbergh Shuns the Rabbi
While terrible things unfold on the streets of America, Charles Lindbergh keeps his distance from Rabbi Bengelsdorf and the media. When he does appear, it is far too brief to allay any anxieties. Then, all of a sudden, his plane vanishes. And the show doesn’t go into detail about what happens to him, but it offers us enough information to figure it out on our own. Before the final episode, Alvin had been pursued by a man he mistook for an FBI agent. He turns out to be British, and he’s plotting to assassinate Lindbergh with the help of Canadians and Americans.
Alvin enters the picture with the knowledge he gained while serving in the war. His mission is to pinpoint the position of Lindbergh’s plane, which is expected to return from Kentucky. Alvin believes they have failed when he is abruptly instructed to cease. In the morning, though, he reads in the papers about Lindbergh’s disappearance. This indicates that they were successful in the end. Depending on the extent of his injuries, he may or might not be killed. However, it does mark the end of the President’s term.
What to Make of America In The End?
‘The Plot Against America’ is a fictional account of “what might have happened to America if,” but its conclusion tips the scales toward reality, leaving viewers with the issue of “what happens to America now?” Despite the fact that the story is set during WWII, it has tremendous resonance in today’s political context. There are unmistakable connections between what is happening in America and other regions of the world right now; with COVID social unrest, inequality, poverty, and inflation, political figures will tap into emotionalities to get the worst of us.
If things don’t seem horrible enough already, watching the events of the series develop should offer you some insight. The story’s timeliness is unsettling, yet ‘The Plot Against America’ isn’t the only novel that foreshadowed such events long before they occurred. Even if it is quiet outside, the show exaggerates the discomfort, and you can sense the turbulence bubbling on the streets.
Tying up The Loose Ends
As Herman and Bess sit by the radio, waiting for the results, their nervousness filters through to you, but the show does nothing to alleviate it. It doesn’t say whether Roosevelt won or lost this time. And it doesn’t say whether fascism triumphed once more. Also, it doesn’t say what happened to the Levin family in the end. Why? Because the showrunners didn’t want to provide you with a solution, just scare the American public with a series meant to end on Election Day.
The adaption of ‘The Plot Against America’ takes place as the country prepares to make a major political decision. Last year, the American people chose Joe Biden to become their President; since then, the unrest has become even bigger. The showrunners wanted to fearmonger their anti-Donald Trump sentiments in this production in 2020; they expressed that several times to the media. But what to make of that after Joe Biden got elected? Did anything change in that country?
If the showrunners wanted to make a limited series and left it at that because they didn’t want the story to conclude on their terms, that was just lazy writing. Still, the finale of ‘The Plot Against America’ aired on the same day as the presidential election, as to give an ominous look of four more years of Trump. But that didn’t happen. America is far worse, crippled with its economy, facing inflation, social unrest, and mocked by authoritarian regimes.
