The Long Call came to a potential end back one week ago. Despite the conclusion, the story has housed itself inside the hearts of the fans that it is difficult not to think about the show. The show last aired on ITV, and the fans finally found out the truth about Simon Walden and which resident of Devon has killed him. The plot for this show took major inspiration from the novel of the same name, which is penned down by Ann Cleeves. The main spotlight is thrown at Matthew Venn, who is the protagonist for The Long Call. He happens to be a detective who has come back to his hometown of North Devon in order to grieve for his late father.
This exposes him to the life that people still live here and how orthodox manners are still upheld. He also confronts the religious communities back from his childhood that threw him out at the young age of 19 years. That situation came forth because he stopped believing in them and came out as gay. Later in the scenes, Matthew is called upon in order to investigate the murder of Simon Walden along with his partner Jen. Simon happens to be a typical resident of North Devon. As the plot hooks deeper and deeper, we find out many hidden secrets. In the initial stages of this investigation, there were absolutely no clues regarding the case, and everyone was just tapping at a dead end. The Long Call – Plot
This is the same community that once cast him aside while he was still young and a teenager. Over the course of 4 episodes, we witnessed that the list of people that Matthew is most suspicious about is growing tremendously. In the initial stages of the case, Simon seemed like a loner who mostly kept to himself. But it was discovered later that he was also involved in the Barum Brethren, a religious community Matthew himself has grown up in. His main suspicions for the killer were at Christopher Beasley. It was all because he would be the most upset person if Simon were to live at his daughter Caroline’s house. As per the past incidents, it is suggested that Simon was asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement by Christopher over an unknown incident. Gaby and Ed were the housemates of Simon, who also made the entire suspect lot at one point in time.
The Long Call Ending Explained
Later, Matthew gathered enough evidence and suspicions to conclude that the killer had to be Dennis, the leader of Barum Brethren. He was actually helping his wife Grace, trying to get out of the abusive relationship. Grace comes forth and establishes the fact that she was suffering mentally while being with Dennis. Thus, Matthew got a search warrant and searched his entire house, and found Simon’s phone but no murder weapon. He arrests Dennis immediately, but the CCTV backs up his cause proving that he had an alibi, he is released from the bars.
It turns out it was Grace who killed Simmons. Dennis mind washed her that Simmons never actually wanted to help her, but he just wanted Dennis out of the picture so he could take up the position as the leader of the Barum Brethren. The blame was inflicted upon her, but she provided enough evidence that claims it was Dennis, who is the mastermind behind the operation.
