Plot
Part one of the show focuses on Carmichael’s life prior to her promotion of The Dale. Jerry Michael’s upbringing led to adolescence, in which he used his good looks and personality to date and married and recruit pals to assist him in committing crimes. He married twice and abandoned both of his families before marrying Vivian Barrett; her younger brother Charles would accompany Jerry on “adventures” where they’d build false IDs and print and pay bogus checks. Vivian and Jerry have five children, two of whom were interviewed for the series: Candi and Michael. They never stayed in one place for long since they had skipped bail after being charged with federal counterfeiting. And had been on the run for years.
Jerry switched to life as a woman while he was in his forties. When Charles first saw her, now known as Liz, he assumed she was doing it to go into clandestine life, but it seems that this is something she has always wanted to do. At this time, after being divorced from Vivian but still co-parenting their children, they decided to seek a job. Transgender persons had a difficult time obtaining jobs in the 1970s, but she ultimately connected with a marketing business, where an inventor called Dale Clifft introduced her to his 3-wheel prototype car. This prompted her to establish the Twentieth Century Motor Automobile Corporation, and she named her new car after its creator.

What happened to Liz Carmichael?
Elizabeth Carmichael had a large family throughout her lifetime. In 1959, she married Vivian Barrett Michael and had five children with her. She was engaged in check forgery and various fraudulent activities, which prompted a police inquiry. Carmichael was always on the go and had to shift locations. As a result, her family was unable to settle down. Vivian and her five children were forced to travel with false identities and work odd jobs in order to survive. Carmichael told her family she identifies as a transgender woman, and Vivian and her children welcomed her with open arms. Vivian, Elizabeth Carmichael’s third wife, testified that she and her children adored Carmichael as much as they did Jerry. Their children referred to her as “Mother Liz” and Vivian just as “mother.”
When Elizabeth first launched her car firm, she often introduced Vivian as her secretary. Carmichael had concocted the ruse that she was a widower (her husband worked for NASA) living with her five children. When the cat escaped from the bag, the whole family was forced to relocate from California to Dallas, Texas. Following the police’s dogged pursuit, the family traveled to Miami, where Carmichael was apprehended. Vivian apparently died in the 1980s owing to health difficulties amid Elizabeth’s elusive existence. Candi Michael, Elizabeth Carmichael’s daughter, claimed in the docuseries that having her father as a mother was a beautiful thing. The change was smooth for the whole family, and they were able to maintain their unity. She adds, matter-of-factly, that they were schooled to live an unpredictable existence since there was a good risk of rapid departure from their position.
Carmichael prepared her children to flee
Carmichael has essentially prepped her children to flee the authorities at the drop of a hat. The family spent much of their time in California and the South. Carmichael’s children assisted her floral business when she was residing in Texas under the identity of Katherine Elizabeth Johnson. The continual travel caused an issue for Carmichael’s children later in life. Because of their fake identities, they have had difficulty filling out common forms or applications. After Carmichael died in 2004, his family kept a low profile in order to avoid public attention.
Carmichael’s sophisticated schemes were known to the youngsters. Candi remembers Carmichael having some futuristic thoughts that may have come true if she hadn’t chosen the route of crime in one of the documentary’s scenes. Carmichael was regarded to be a caring and charming matriarch despite their hard and terrible upbringing. Even in the midst of frequent difficulties, Elizabeth Carmichael strove hard to keep her filial life together.

What was the Dale?
Dale Clifft hand-built an automobile out of tubes and coated it in red metal flake Naugahyde before meeting Geraldine Elizabeth “Liz” Carmichael. It was propelled by a 305cc Honda Super Hawk motorbike bolted to the metal frame. Clifft developed and constructed the Dale prototype, and Carmichael later marketed the concept. Carmichael told the Chicago Sun-Times in November 1974 that she was “on her way to taking on General Motors or any other vehicle maker for that matter.” She also claimed to have millions of dollars in funding “from private parties,” as well as a 150,000 sq. ft. corporate headquarters in Encino, California. The prototypes were allegedly created in Canoga Park. And an aviation hangar in Burbank was allegedly rented for the assembly facility, which employed more than 100 people. The Dale was also touted as high-tech, lightweight, and safer than any other automobile on the market at the time.
She also said that she drove into a wall at 48 km/h and that there was no structural damage to the automobile. The Dale, according to Carmichael, was powered by a highly rebuilt BMW two-cylinder motorcycle engine that allowed the automobile to exceed 137 km/h. She predicted 88,000 automobile sales in the first year and 250,000 in the second. At the 1975 Los Angeles Auto Show, a non-operational Dale model was on exhibit. The automobile was also featured as a reward on the television game program The Price Is Right. With this, we conclude our coverage of this topic here at Otakukart.
