If you have watched Serenity, you might have been shocked by the sudden twist in the end. Many critics have claimed that the twist is completely absurd and does not fit the vibe of the movie at all. It seems like the bridge was forcefully made, and it collapsed in the end. However, the audience was completely mind blown by the climax. Yet, a lot of them felt very confused about it too. At first, the movie seemed to be dealing with the life of a boat captain who gets to choose between his life trying to catch the gigantic tuna or helping out his ex-wife to murder her now abusive ex-husband. She has also offered him $10 million for the assistance.
However, in the end, as the movie unwraps, he finds the weird twist that everything that has been shown to us for so long was nothing but just a video game. Yet, it is not that absurd as you might think it to be. There is some in-depth analysis that we need to go through to understand the whole movie in its full essence. Once you get the ending properly, you will go for a second watch.
Baker Dill, the boat captain, has been dreaming about catching a gigantic tuna fish, which is named “justice” by Dill. The name stands to be extremely symbolic as the story flows. One day, Dill’s ex-wife Karen arrives in Plymouth Island.
She begs him to help her. Her new husband is extremely powerful and abusive. She wants Dill to kill him and is even offering $10 million for it. The price is extremely high, yet Dill is now in conflict with his morals and even a life that he has left way behind. His life could either change for the worse or, the better.
Karen had drawn up a plan where Dill would be booked as the captain for a small tour around the sea. Her abusive husband, Frank to throws off at the sea whenever he gets the opportunity. She begs him to save her and her son’s life. The whole story is quite engaging up to this point. The audience is quite engaged and wants to find out if Dill will go on with the murder.
However, the twist comes here, and we find out that Plymouth Island is not a real town. It has been made with artificial intelligence. It is a game that Patrick had made when he was missing his father. In real life, his father was in the US Navy and had died in Iraq. He had added his stepfather and mother when they got married.
Patrick is aware of his stepfather’s abuse towards him and his mother. He does want to get out of the situation and is also thinking about how things would be different when his father would be here.
However, what was quite impressive was how the director Steven Knight drew the parallels between real life and the video game. You will most definitely be impressed with how the final scene comes out.
In the end, Patrick does murders his stepfather and goes to jail. After he returns, he designs another video game where he and his father has reunited.
What exactly happened in “Serenity” Ending?
Now you might be wondering about the ending of the movie. There is a high chance that you got a “Black Mirror” vibe from the movie. However, it is far away from that. The ending makes us think about the numerous choices we get in our lives and how they would affect our lives.
Each option, each choice that we make, has the power to make our lives different. As T.S Eliot had written in a poem, “And time yet for a hundred indecisions, And for a hundred visions and revisions, Before the taking of a toast and tea.” Patrick can make some hundred revisions in his game. He can choose to put an end to the abuse he has been facing, or he could keep himself shut. The whole game is his vision, and he can keep on revising the ways to put an end to the misery.
However, in the end, he stands up for justice. As much as his father wanted “justice”, Patrick finally gave justice to his family. He brought justice to his mother, who had been suffering. Even though he had to get punished, he had managed to murder his stepfather. The scene shows us as Dill kills Frank, Patrick kills Frank in real life.
The movie is about having the personal choice to choose between the type of life you will be leading. It is up to you whether you want to keep on living in misery, or you can take the situation into your hands and make it better for yourself.
