The Curse of La Llorona is the latest movie from The Conjuring Universe, to be precise it is the sixth installment of the franchise. The movie has been directed by Michael Chaves and written by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis. The distribution of the movie is being handled by Warner Bros. Pictures. This movie was released on 19 April 2019.
Star cast of the movie includes Patricia Velásquez, Raymond Cruz, Linda Cardellini, etc. The movie is based on the Mexican folklore La Llorona. The plot of the movie is simple, a single mother has to take care of her children who are being threatened to be possessed and killed by a ghost. The movie continues the horror genre like all others The Conjuring Universe franchise movies.
So, some could say that it is the same thing all over again as at the start of the movie the plot somehow is relatable to other movies. But what sets it apart is the family drama and sympathy for the kids which is looking like a good addition. The character of Anna is pretty impressive as she is not like the other protagonists of the normal horror movies but she is a social worker who knows what she is dealing with and is pretty fearless unlike most of the horror movie protagonists.
Anna takes care of the children as well as she can. The set pieces in the movie when La Llorona is alone with the kids is particularly eye-catching and impressive.
Sometimes the ghost appears as a ghost who one cannot touch and sometimes as a zombie, seems like this one is a diversely powerful ghost. The only frustrating thing about this movie is that it is applying the same old formula of the past five movies.
Since the audience has also seen movies based on this formula what is the fun of making a new one on the same old formula. This adaptation of Mexican La Llorona could have been scarier and more thrilling but unfortunately for me, it wasn’t as scarier as it could have been.
Thus, in a nutshell even though it has a good story, suspense set pieces but the implementation of the same formula makes it a not no interesting movie. Thus, for me, the movie should be rated as 2.8 out of 5 stars. Have you watched the movie yet? Do you agree with this post?
