Plot

20 years after a flu pandemic results in the collapse of civilization, our story begins. A group of survivors, who are part of a troupe of traveling performers, lives are turned into chaos after they encounter a violent cult led by a man who is unknowingly linked to one of its members. The star actress of the Travelling Symphony is a young woman named Kirsten, played by Mackenzie Davis. After starring in a show with Arthur Leander, played by Gael Garcia Bernal, at the onset of the pandemic, she became a child actress. She reads a graphic novel called Station Eleven in between performances.

The series shows life in the pre-apocalyptic past as well as the post-apocalyptic present. It shows Clark Thompson, played by David Wilmot, who was once Arthur Leander’s best friend, but after his death, now is married to his wife and leads an isolated compound at the Severn City Airport. As he married his former best friend’s wife, Elizabeth, there is a lot of friction between him and Tyler Leander, played by Daniel Zovatto, the son of Arthur and Elizabeth.

Tyler also goes on to become a cult leader known as The Prophet, after a traumatic event in his childhood. It also shows Jeevan Chaudhary, played by Himesh Patel, who was once a man who suffered from panic attacks, but later goes on to become a calm and peaceful doctor. He suffers a lot throughout the show including losing his brother Frank, played by Nabhaan Rizwan, who was a writer who became a recluse after an injury left him disabled. The ending of the story left viewers a little confused, which is why we have here Station Eleven Season 1: Ending Explained.

Station Eleven Season 1: Ending Explained

There are a lot of flashbacks in the show, but the season finale flashback is the most compelling one. The author of the graphic novel ‘Station Eleven’ as well as the metaphorical author of the events of the series, Miranda Carroll, was shown intervening and not letting the Gitchegumee flight deplane, thus, saving humanity. A dying Miranda calls the airport and stops the flight from Chicago from deplaning, as the passengers of the plane were infected with the virus. In order to survive the end of the world, Clark, Elizabeth, Tyler, and a few other people occupy an airport in Severn city. If Miranda had not intervened, the passengers of the craft would have infected everyone at the airport and humanity would cease to exist.

A play is featured in the climax of the season. The Symphony had visited the Museum of Civilization, which was set up after the pandemic and is the most advanced location they performed at. They choose to perform Hamlet as a result of this. The dynamic between the central characters of Hamlet resembles that of Clark, Elizabeth, and Tyler, which Kirsten realizes. Hoping that they will reach a more peaceful conclusion than a war and that the story of the play will make them understand what’s important, she decides to direct the play and casts them. Though initially, Tyler intended on violence, he changes his mind and the trio reaches a peaceful conclusion, and Kirsten’s plan works.

The night of the pandemic, Jeevan takes care of Kirsten. The two do not cross paths again after that for the whole season. After the performance of the play concludes, the pair meet each other again. Clark is badly burned and Jeevan arrives at the airport to take care of him. Sarah then passes away and he is at her side as well. The emotional backbone of the story is Jeevan’s acts of kindness. As the Symphony moves on to its next destination, in the end, Jeevan and Kirsten walk down the same road. As he goes back to his children and she goes with the Symphony they go their separate ways again. However, we can be assured that they will see each other again.
