Star Wars as a franchise has certainly grown to various media forms to tell us interesting stories from time to time. As this went on for decades and may continue in decades to come, many interesting characters have come and gone. But the most interesting and quite mysterious is of Jedi Master Yoda, who came in as one of the greatest Jedis the first time we saw him. Well, he didn’t look so, but he definitely was and had been training the next generation for centuries. So how old is Yoda exactly with that calculation?
So answering the same, here we are taking a look at all the hints we have about Yoda. To be honest, the character was never a fleshed-out one, but that’s what made him more interesting and worth keeping an eye on. So we will begin from the movie where Yoda died of old age and also stated how old he is. Then to the events where he referred to the time, he trained so many Jedis. Lastly, to the new character of his species who is telling his story in Star Wars’ latest Disney+ Original, The Mandalorian. So let’s begin.
How Old Is Yoda In Star Wars Franchise?
Yoda had just become 900 years old when he died in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. This mention came right from his own mouth in the same movie itself. Unlike most of the characters, who died battling, Yoda took his last breathes due to old age. Luke Skywalker was the last person he talked to as he asked him to be the last of the Jedis. Yoda is 900 years old was quite a figure fans needed who have always been wondering about the character’s right age.
Anyway, ever since the time we first met Yoda in the earlier Star Wars movies. When fans meet Yoda in flesh, his species is something that has always intrigued them. George Lucas, on the other hand, never really did have an idea for the species he wanted him to be. At the same time, he wanted the character to be special and asked everyone not to have any story or more characters like him around. The only two other characters from the same species to appear in the franchise are Yaddle and Grogu. More on that later.
So this kinda explains why Yoda as an entire character was a mystery, and so was his age. Although we did have a hint before, when Luke met Yoda for the first time in The Empire Strikes Back. The answer of the same did leave a lot of eyeballs popping as we heard it. Yoda had mentioned that he trained Jedis for around 800 years, and more than 20,000 Jedis have trained under him. So basically, every other Jedi knows him. Thus making his species more mysterious, wondering how long they can actually go on. So part of his story is still a mystery. But with the help of a character of similar species, we are getting answers in Star Wars’ latest Disney+ Original Series, The Mandalorian.
How Grogu From The Mandalorian Tells More About The Age Of Yoda?
Like we said above, we certainly had more subtle hints about how old Yoda and his species can go on to be. The most recent example comes from the character Grogu appearing in The Mandalorian. If we talk about Grogu, he is the youngest character of Yoda’s species so far in the franchise. Earlier in the show, the characters went on to refer to him as the child. Many believed the child was Yoda himself, but that’s not the case.
The Mandalorian as a show takes place before the rise of Kylo Ren and the First Order from The Force Awakens. So we may not have a story of Yoda, but we do have the story of a species similar to him and how old they can be around a certain age. At this point, Grogu is around 50 years old, and he is just a baby. So he has so many years live on.
Fifty years into the future, he could become the next Jedi as it was the same age Yoda became a Jedi. So if not Yoda, at least Grogu’s story is something that will tell us more about this mysterious species, which has stayed mysterious for most of the Star Wars Franchise. Until then, we will be looking forward to The Mandalorian Season 3 coming around.
