Charlotte returns to the namesake beach resort town in Season 2 of the absorbing period drama TV series ‘Sanditon,’ after the death of her previous love Sidney Parker. She resolves to forego marriage and love in order to focus on gaining perspective in life as she grieves her loss. However, fate has it that she meets two attractive potential suitors in episode 2 who may alter Charlotte’s plans. Charlotte is excited about her new position as a governess, but her first day on the job shows that her two charges, as well as her boss, Mr Colbourne, maybe too much for her to handle.
In addition, a couple more known individuals return to Sanditon, causing a commotion in the tranquil town. Charlotte’s new employment as a governess is jeopardised in the second episode, which finishes with a surprising revelation. If you’re curious about ‘Sanditon’ season 2 episode 2’s shocking ending, let’s take a look at it with a quick recap, shall we?
Sanditon Season 2 Episode 2 Review & Recap
Leonora Colbourne, to her father’s chagrin, is uninterested in ladylike hobbies and would rather spend her time learning about snails. Meanwhile, Augusta, his 18-year-old niece, has evidently spent her unsupervised spare time perfecting the caustic comment. Augusta compares having a riding coach who has never sat in the saddle to having an unmarried Charlotte prepare her for a life as a society lady.
Later in the episode, Augusta’s behaviour against Charlotte changes from cruel to evil when she fools her governess into opening a locked spinet. Mr Colbourne becomes enraged when the sound of music draws his attention, pointing out that the instrument was locked for a purpose. Augusta is to blame, but Charlotte accepts responsibility, fully expecting to be fired as a result. Before she goes, she calls Mr Colbourne out on his shortcomings as a parent and guardian. However, her demeanour appears to impress him, and he invites her to return the next day. He appears to be interested in more than just her abilities as a governess, based on the way he looks at her as she walks away.

Alison Has A Crush On Captain Carter
Charlotte may be a working lady today, but she still gets to have a good time when she attends Captain Lennox’s mess dinner. Of course, now that she’s a governess, she’s consigned to the lower end of the long dinner table, to social Siberia. In the first ballroom scene of the season, Lennox apologises for the unavoidable offence as he twirls her around the dancing. He also gives her some “war strategy” advice to assist her deal with her new responsibilities. When she mentions her new boss’s name, though, he becomes glum. Lennox is tight-lipped about the situation, but it appears that he and Mr Colbourne.
The meal marks Alison’s first big social outing in Sanditon for Charlotte’s younger sister Charlotte. Alison is eager to be swept off her feet, despite her older sibling’s vow to avoid love. Captain Carter, the dashing soldier who rescued her following the carriage tragedy in episode 1, has captured her heart. He’s smitten, too, but he’s not above lying to impress her with a few white lies. He acts as if he knows what she’s talking about when she praises a specific poet. Later, he enlists the help of his friend Captain Fraser as his Cyrano, intending to learn how to seduce a “lady of refinement” from him. What are the chances that Fraser will fall in love with Alison? They must be very good, right?
Charles Lockhart Leaves An Indelible Mark
Thanks to a last-minute intervention by Arthur, Georgiana Lambe is seated next to the artist Charles Lockhart during dinner. Georgiana dismisses Lockhart’s advances, and the conversation devolves into bickering. After the rest of the table toasts the monarch, Lockhart, who enjoys being purposely controversial, toasts Napoleon, congratulating him for abolishing slavery. It’s clear that he’s trying to impress Georgiana, even though he denies it. It also enrages the rest of the dinner guests, which is understandable given that he’s in a room full of army officers and England is at war with France.
Georgiana continues to give Lockhart the cold shoulder, but she appears to be warming up to him later during a talk on the balcony. His ambition to break the rules of society appeals to her. When Mary Parker notices the two having a conversation, she becomes a little apprehensive. Georgiana has a rebellious tendency, and Mary is probably scared that she’ll run away as she did with Otis Molyneux last season.
Clara’s Back
Meanwhile, Edward Denham is doing everything he can to persuade Esther and Lady Denham that he has changed his ways. Both are pessimistic, and with good reason, it turns out. Lady Denham’s estranged niece Clara makes a surprise appearance towards the end of the episode. And, surprise, surprise, she’s expecting a child. Lady D is about to eject her once more, when Clara reveals that Edward is the biological father. Given Clara and Edward’s tryst on the floor at the end of season 1, the timing seems ideal. Is Edward, on the other hand, aware of the baby? It’s possible that this is all part of a larger strategy to gain access to their aunt’s substantial riches.
