A Room with a View is a 1985 British romance film directed by James Ivory and based on E. M. Forster’s novel of the same name. It was written by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and produced by Ismail Merchant (1908). Maggie Smith, Denholm Elliott, Daniel Day-Lewis, Judi Dench, and Simon Callow star alongside Helena Bonham Carter and Julian Sands as Lucy and George, respectively.
It’s about a young woman named Lucy Honeychurch in the closing throes of Edwardian England’s restricted and repressive culture, and her burgeoning love for a free-spirited young man named George Emerson. By using chapter titles to separate subject portions, the film closely follows the novel.
A Room with a View was a box office success and gained widespread critical acclaim. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards (including Best Picture) and won three: Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Art Direction, and Best Costume Design at the 59th Academy Awards. It has also won a Golden Globe and five British Academy Film Awards.
Room With A View Filming Locations
Room With A View Filming Locations includes many places in North America, but the majority of the filming took place in the lands of England and Italy. Now we will be diving into different locations in Italy and England where Room With A View was shot.
Locations from the film A Room with a View in Italy
1. Florence’s Via dei Girolami.
The film begins with a shot of “a room with a view,” and it delivers on its promise. Except for the fact that the view is terrible. It’s not of the Arno River in Florence, as one might imagine, but of a strange backalley called Via dei Girolami.
2. Lungarno degli Archibusieri, 4, Florence, Hotel Degli Orafi
A Room with a View is a hotel and a bed and breakfast. It’s what we’d call a guesthouse. Charlotte and Lucy are staying at the Pension Bertolini, which is reported to be located on the Arno River (hence the promised view, which Lucy finally gets). It was the Quisiana e Ponte Vecchio hotel in real life during the time of filming. Unfortunately, it was damaged by a car bomb in the early 1990s. Early in the film, the Ponte Vecchio appears in a couple of establishing shots.

3. Villa di Maiano is located at 1 Via del Salviatino in Maiano.
In addition to Hotel Degli Orafi, I have it on good authority that Villa di Maiano, just outside of Florence, also served as a stand-in for some of the interiors of Pension Bertolini.
4. Florence’s Piazza Della Santissima Annunziata.
Charlotte flies to Florence to explore with eccentric Eleanor, our next A Room with a View Italy location, while Lucy has a lie-in and fools around back at the Pension. They admire Ferdinando I’s Equestrian Monument in Florence’s Piazza Della Santissima Annunziata. When they see the Emersons heading into Loggia dei Servi di Maria, they decide to stay back so they don’t have to speak to them.
Locations from the film A Room with a View in England
1. Foxwold House is located in Brasted Chart, Kent, on Piper’s Lane.
Lucy goes to England, where she receives a quick proposal from the well-to-do Cecil Vyse. Windy Corner, a simple yet luxurious estate in the village of Summer street, Surrey, is the name of her estate. In reality, Foxwold House on Piper’s Lane in Brasted Chart, Kent, is a private residence. As a result, you will most likely be unable to visit this area because it is private property.
2. Edenbridge, Kent’s Chiddingstone Village.
Lucy and Cecil went for a walk through the village of Summerstreet to get away from their own engagement celebration. One of the most attractive A Room with a View locales is a small row of Tudor houses that serves as the entire village. Chiddingstone Village in Kent is another National Trust site.
3. Chiddingstone, Kent’s St Mary’s the Virgin Church.
The young couple observes Reverend Beebe’s church (played by Simon Callow), which is St Mary’s the Virgin Church in Chiddingstone, Kent, while on their walk. They discuss who should rent the Honeychurch’s vacant cottage with him.
4. The Sultanate of Oman’s Embassy is located at 167 Queen’s Gate in South Kensington.
You’ll miss this A Room with a View filming site if you blink! Lucy writes to the two Miss Alans she met at the Florence Pension, inviting them to rent her family’s charming Summerstreet cottage. In their upper-middle-class London house, they read her letter aloud. It was the Estonian Embassy during the time of filming. Today, it serves as the Sultanate of Oman’s embassy.
