Once Upon A Time In America. movie explores the major theme of emotion with multiple genres of childhood friendships, love, lust, greed, betrayal, loss, broken relationships, and many more. The movie follows the Epic Crime Plot. The film got released in 1984. It is co-written and directed by Italian filmmaker Sergio Leone and starring Robert De Niro and James Woods.

According to few resources, Film is based on true incidents but indeed, Once Upon a Time in America is based on the Hoods, a semi-autobiographical novel by Harry Grey, whose real name was Herschel Goldberg. The main character of the novel had spent his youth in involvement with some of the activities attributed to Noodles (Robert De Niro’s character) and his gang.

No one ever thought that the movie could do well at the box office. The female character of the movie, Jennifer Connelly’s did comedy for the first time in this movie. The film has two versions, and the shorter version has flopped. It was critically bashed. But the original “European cut” was critically appreciated, but it did not go well at the box office.

Storyline

Once Upon A Time In America was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 20, 1984. The film was appreciated well. In fact, the film received a record-breaking ovation of nearly 20 minutes. The budget of the filmmaking was $30millions, but Fim only Collected $5.3 million dollars. The movie was the best historic gangster film but flopped at Box Office. 

The prologue of the film gives us information about three men in search of a man, Noodles, and they torture people for the information. They enter into a theatre where the proprietors are hidden, and they warn Noodles. The character of Noodles is very destructive. He is heavily drugged and apathetic. The pre-story of the film is that they killed Noodles’s ex-girlfriend Eve, and his money has been stolen and leaves the city. The lead character of the story lives on drugs. The pilot shows us that he is hiding, but in the climax, he is smiling. It was his dream to hit up the opium, and the scene reflects inner peace and satisfaction. You can also call it a guilty pleasure.

Director,  Sergio Leone 

Sergio Leone was an Italian producer, film director, and screenwriter. He was born on January 3, 1929 – April 30, 1989. Sergio was born in Rome. He started his filming career when he was 18 and drop out of Law University. Sergio started his career in Italian Cinema as an assistant. He was known and famous for his juxtaposing extreme close-up shots and long shots. A Fistful of Dollars, Once Upon a Time in the West, For a Few Dollars More are his best works among all of his best films. Sergio Leone died on April 30, 1989, of a heart attack at the age of 60. A place only Mary knows, Leningrad: The 900 Days, Don Quixote, Coltand there were few other unreleased projects of him.

While approaching the actor De Niro for the film Once Upon A Time In America, Sergio Leone went to his washroom in the hotel. In addition to the incident, when De Niro saw a few urine drops on her toilet seat, he refused the offer. Eventually, he did the film with Sergio.

Filming Locations

The film was shot at different locations with enticing views, and the cinematography has done creatively with closeup and clear visions of actions. The majority of the scenes of the film were shot in Rome and at the famous Cinecittà Studios, where so many of Italy’s best post-war movies were produced. A few more cinematography was done shot in such areas as, Paris, Montreal, and St. Petersburg, Williamsburg Bridge, Florida, New York City, New York, USA, Cinecittà Studios, Cinecittà, Italy studio, Rome, Lazio,  Don Cesar Hotel – 3400 Gulf Boulevard.

supplementary cinematography, such as the beach scene, In which  Max exposes his plan to rob the Federal Reserve, was shot at The Don CeSar in St. Pete Beach, Florida.  Distinct enticing scene of the New York’s railway “Grand Central Station” scene in the thirties flashbacks was filmed in the  Gare Du Nord in Paris. The interior decoration of the luscious restaurant where Noodles takes Deborah on their date was shot in the Hotel Excelsior in Venice in Italy. The Long Island restaurant in which the noodle took his girlfriend to date was filmed in Venice.
