Anime has existed for longer than most of us reading this article. With each passing decade came a new technology that helped with improving the anime word. Over the years, different studios have emerged to add their own touch to various anime. In short, there are many anime out there with different styles. This also brings up people’s preferences for these anime – some like certain anime while the others won’t. Opinions differ, and that is alright. However, over these years, there is this one anime that was loved by all for almost more than 10 years, and that anime is none other than Naruto. Subsequently, Naruto has been named the anime of the decade according to Japan.
Naruto is a Japanese animated series consisting of 2 parts, Naruto and Naruto Shippuden. The first part introduces us to Naruto and the main conflict of the whole series. In Shippuden, this conflict is continued, however, with many twists and turns taking place, which we will further address in this article. Naruto was created by Masashi Kishimoto. This anime went on air from 2002 and 2017 and has gained an immense amount of fan following. But what exactly is there in the anime that made Japan give it the title of the best anime of the decade? Let’s find out!
What made Naruto the best anime of the decade?
Naruto first showed up as a very naughty child who creates chaos wherever he goes. We later learn that he is an orphan and only does these things to get a reaction from the adults. What is interesting about this little boy is the fact that he doesn’t give up, go back on his words, and dares to dream. Naruto dreams of becoming the Hokage, that is, the Head of his village someday. He knows that he has the potential to become one, although others laugh at his dreams. Naruto’s resolve has inspired many of the viewers. His never-give-up attitude creates a spark within us that makes us want to get out of our comfort zones and do things to achieve our goals. Eventually, as you keep watching the anime, you will become so drawn towards Naruto that you too will cry whenever he cries.
Not only this but the message of the “Will of Fire” is sent very well in the anime. This “Will of Fire” talks about how everybody in the village is a large family. Well, initially, people did not like Naruto as he was a “demon kid,” but gradually, they warmed up to him and accepted him as one of their own. It teaches us values regarding the people around us that we care about. Naruto is seen running after Sasuke, his “friend” who leaves the village for power to kill his brother. The former is seen chasing after his friend even though the latter has long forgotten the feelings of comradeship. Naruto, thus, naturally possesses the Will of Fire, and because of his Ninja Way of never backing down, we end up looking up to him.
Well, no. Like I mentioned before, Naruto Shippuden continues with the same main conflict from part 1 of the entire series. However, it adds and uncovers most of the plot in the latter half of part two. It is an inside joke among the fans relating to the character Itachi Uchiha. Whenever somebody mentions that they hate this character, the automatic response to the hate would be, “Which episode are you on?”. That is because the most feared ninja’s real intentions were revealed in Shippuden. If this Truth had been revealed earlier, the main conflict of Naruto would have subsided or have taken a very interesting turn. Itachi is now one of the most loved characters in the series but wait, there’s more!
You might remember the hype we all had when “Thanos was coming” in the Avengers series. Well, let’s just say that before Thanos, there was Madara Uchiha. Madara’s existence itself was an intriguing thing about the plot. When the war was declared upon the ninjas, all the nations in the anime had to “Avengers Assemble” themselves. The battle that took place with Madara Uchiha v/s the entire Shinobi alliance, was indeed a chilling one. This whole secrecy created a curiosity within viewers. When you start watching Naruto Shippuden, you cannot help but binge-watch the latter half of the part as it throws one after another plot twists at you.
Does Naruto deserve the “Anime of the Decade” title?
Yes, Naruto deserves the “Anime of the Decade” title! What is heart-warming yet the part that is made fun of is Naruto’s Talk-no-Jutsu. It basically happens when Naruto talks the villains out of their bad ways. I understand why it is made fun of but let’s take a step back and look into the Jutsu. We as viewers definitely cannot wield the Rasengan but what we can do is use words. In fact, words are our strongest weapons. It is very impressive of the creator that he made his main character use words to defeat the hatred within the main antagonist rather than using supernatural powers which the viewers do not possess. ‘
This makes us feel like we, too, can influence ourselves and those around us by only using words. We all possess this Talk-no-Jutsu and can make a change if we keep pushing forward. Thus, Naruto indeed is the anime of the decade.
Whatever I have mentioned so far may only be a very small part of why Naruto is a great anime. It is a long-known fact, though, that this anime is so much loved that fans asked for more. This gave us “Boruto: Naruto’s Next Generations,” where we are taken on the journeys of Naruto’s son and see Naruto live out his dream as the Hokage of the village. You can watch the mentioned anime on streaming platforms like Netflix and Crunchyroll.
