The film starts with us witnessing Napoleon in the form of a teenager who is pretty awkward. He lives in Presto in Idaho with his grandmother and older brother Kip. Kip is 32 years in age and is unemployed but still aspires to be a cage fighter. He is an average kid who doodles various fantasy creatures and daydreams about them, occasionally getting bullied and tormented by other students, particularly Don and Randy. Napoleon is fond of making up stories about himself as well as his outlandish skills despite having an aloof personality. Then his uncle Rico comes to take care of the kids as their grandmother has broken her coccyx and needs time to rest. Rico treats them both as his own kids. He even teams up with Kip to sell door to door.
As for Napoleon, he finds friends in two people at school. The first one is Dev, a very shy girl who is the owner of various small businesses in order to raise money for college. The second one is Pedro. He is a bold boy but is very calm and has been transferred from Juarez to Mexico. Pedro asks Summer, a popular girl in school to a high school dance, but she refuses. Instead, he then asks Deb, who gladly says yes. Then Napoleon is encouraged by him to ask someone, and thus, he asks Trisha and delivers an awkward-looking drawing to her mother. Her mother is one of Rico’s customers, and he sympathizes with her mother, who then forces Trisha to accept Napoleon as her partner for the dance. In the middle of the night, Trisha ditches Napoleon and Deb ends up dancing with him.
