One Piece has been a long journey for us, and unlike many other series, it only got better with time. So, here’s one question for the fans, in all these years, have you ever wondered about Monkey D Luffy’s family? You must have because most of the shonen series tend to complicate things when it comes to the parents of the protagonist, and you expect something similar from the series considered as one of the pinnacles of the shonen genre.
The lack of clues about Luffy’s parents or their whereabouts has made this mystery even more intriguing. But let me assure you that about Luffy’s father, he isn’t dead, and neither is he completely detached from the storyline like Izuku’s father in My Hero Academia. He was raised by his grandfather and Curly Dadan till he sets out on his journey to become the Pirate King. Here, we’ll take a walk through the facts and evidence that more or less solves the mystery behind Monkey D. Luffy’s father.
Who are Luffy’s Father and Mother?
Based on the events in One Piece, I think it’s safe to assume that Monkey D. Dragon, the infamous Supreme Commander, is Luffy’s father. He is popularly known as the “World’s Worst Criminal,’ and the World Government accused him of crimes too graphic to explain in case my family is reading this article. Come on, the similarities in their names are a good enough hint, and this theory is further confirmed by Akainu during Ace’s execution. ( Portgas D Ace or Gol D Ace) And also by Monkey D Garp(Luffy’s grandfather) after Nico Robin’s rescue from cp9.
Thankfully, none of those allegations against Dragon are true, and rather, he is a very empathetic person, particularly to those who are oppressed by the World Government’s system. For example, Dragon risked his life to save Sabo from being killed by a World Noble, and the 12-year-old boy became a trusted member of the Revolutionary Army for the next 12 years.
Curly Dadan was the only mother-like entity Luffy ever had, she was appointed by Gard to take care of Luff. There’s no clue about Luffy’s biological mother, though. Many fans believe that Amazon Lily could be his mother, relying on the significance of Luffy being sent to her.
Have Luffy and Dragon Met Each Other in the Series?
Yes, Luffy and Dragon had met each other in Chapter 100, when Dragon saved Luffy from being captured by Smoker in Loguetown. That’s the only time we saw them together, and the father-son reunion didn’t look very heartwarming either.
Despite One Piece being 1000+ chapters long, mangaka Eiichiro Oda hasn’t revealed much about the abilities and personality of Monkey D. Dragon. With just a handful of appearances, Monkey D Dragon is undoubtedly one of the most perplexing characters in the series so far. Totally ignoring the possibilities of Dragon remaining a mystery forever, I am really looking forward to him playing a crucial part in the remaining chapters.
Luffy’s Grandpa is the Hero of Marine
It’s no secret that pirates and Marines are poles apart from each other, making it even harder for fans to imagine a Marine being a part of Luffy’s family. Monkey D. Garp, Luffy’s grandfather, is the strongest Marine ever, who took down Don Chinjao with 400 million bounty on his head with just one hit. Despite their differences, he cares deeply for his grandson and has shown to be proud of some of his achievements. We even saw them getting along with each other quite a few times, scolding and laughing with each other.
Is Luffy Related to the Pirate King?
I think you must have guessed by now that Luffy has to be related to the Pirate King both by familial ties and by destiny. It may be very distant, but Luffy and Roger D. Gold are expected to have an ancestral connection, and both of them sharing the same middle name makes the theory even more convincing.
Right from sharing similar unwavering will, and the signature straw hat to being held for execution at the same platform, there have been too many hints throughout the series. You must have figured out by now that all the events in One Piece are interconnected with each other, and I am really looking forward to seeing how Luffy’s past follows the same pattern. However, Luffy’s family tree is still pretty blurry to all the fans, and I am sure that none of us could have known it all apart from Oda sensei himself and the child suffering from cancer to whom he revealed the ending.
