The world knows Lionel Messi as the “Greatest of All Time” in the world of football. After playing for the Spanish club known as FC Barcelona for 18 years, Messi is finally saying goodbye to the club and its fans. However, this news has devastated the hearts of his and the club’s fans as well. Messi has been the most successful and consistent player for Barcelona in all these years. From debuting with the club to winning a huge number of titles for Barcelona, it has been a long journey for him. Although this decision came along with a lot of speculations.
The previous contract of Messi with the club was to expire on the 30th of June 2021. Knowing that the club was already in process of making a new contract to retain the star player with them. FC Barcelona had even reached a final agreement with Messi’s representatives. The agreement was of a new contract which would further keep him with the club for the next five years. Despite all this, things did not as planned and Barca announced that Lionel Messi will no longer be a part of FC Barcelona. From that moment, there have been a lot of theories and speculations behind the real reason for Messi leaving after 18 years.
Why Is Messi Leaving FC Barcelona After 18 years?
According to the Spanish club, they had already prepared a new contract to keep Messi with them. However, they could not fulfill the terms and conditions of the contract because of their financial standings. With their statement about their financial status, it is being assumed that their hands were tied due to the spending limits or the salary cap limitations. LaLiga has a rule of imposing a salary cap on the clubs according to the club’s income and costs. This rule limits the amount of expenditure a club can spend on wages. In addition to that, FC Barcelona is already in a huge debt amounting to over a billion dollars. Both these circumstances would have held them back in fulfilling Lionel Messi’s extremely high salary.
Although this is only a theory, it looks to be the closest one to the real reason behind Messi’s departure. But, in addition to other theories, there is one that states it might have been Messi’s decision to leave. He might have not been happy about some of the terms of the new contract which eventually made him take this step. If this theory turns out to be true, this would not be too hard to believe. There have been many players who have left their clubs because their terms were not met in their contracts.
