Sung Ye Rin’s speech is suspicious.
Both Sung Ye Rin and Baek Seung Yoo have the task of writing a speech based on their chosen topic. Baek Seung Yoo is still working on his, but Sung Ye Rin already made a submission to Ji Yoon Soo. When Ji Yoon Soo read the speech, she is not sure if it was written by Sung Ye Rin. This is because the analogy, research, and language in the speech do not match the caliber of a high school student but an expert. Being in charge of both the competitors, Ji Yoon Soo feels like she should inform the matter to the director. But she did;t really take any interest in it.
The same day Sung Ye Rin comes to the class to meet Ji Yoon Soo. It was about her speech. Ji Yoon Soo added some notes to her speech. Not pointing out what she thought, Ji Yoon Soo just said that it is well written. But she does bring the topic casually, saying, wasn’t it too hard for you to write? To this Sung, Ye Rin replied that math was never easy for her, and she doesn’t have the same talent as Baek Seung Yoo. While she was saying her side, Ji Yoon assured her that even she was not born with a talent for math. And that both of them should not see the math olympiad as a competition but as a festival.
Min Jae’s past trauma
Baek Seung Yoo and Sung Ye Rin arrive at the math olympiad the next day. Ms. Ji Yoon hands them their registration and leaflets. And while she is telling them the details, Sung Ye Rin takes a leave. She goes to a van in the parking lot where her mother is waiting for her. As they are supposed to enter the gates at 1.20 pm, she uses her time to practice.
At the center, Seung Yoo sees a lecturer from the department of MIT where he used to study as a 10-year-old. He tries to hide, but the professor recognizes him, and while he is introducing Seung Yoo to his colleagues, he couldn’t see Seung Yoo’s traumatized. We could see in the past at MIT Seung Yoo had a friend who used to say that Min Jae is special and he could never be like him. And because of this guilt, Seung Yoo’s friend commits suicide.
All this is so much for him that he couldn’t take it and runs to the terrace. Here while he is sitting gasping for breath, he sees a gloomy light and remembers that meaning of melancholia he discussed with Ji Yoon. And in that melancholia, he finally finds the answer to his question.
The Youth mathematician speech competition
Finally, after an array of problems, the international mathematician speech competition commenced. And while the introductory is giving the speech, everyone is present in the hall. After a few students have their speech, it is finally Sung Ye Rin’s turn. When she came on stage everyone was amazed to see that she had prepared her speech in English for the competition. Looking at her speech, the hope for other students winning is lost.
No one knows, but the pressure takes a toll on Sung Ye Rin, and after her speech, she runs straight to the bathroom to throw up. Finally, it is Baek Seung Yoo’s turn. He is nervous but also confident. His analogies and presentation take the room by storm. The most memorable line of his speech was that the “Starry Night” painting by Van Gogh was painted in 1988, but it still inspires us to do many things. And it will continue to do soo.
