‘Megalo Box,’ Season 1- Recap

Directed by Hiroshi Moriyama, ‘Megalo Box’ showcases the future of boxing. Megalo Boxing has become a famous sport where the boxers use metal frames or mechanical limb enhancers to make their attacks extremely fatal and sometimes deadly. Joe, who also goes by the name of Junk Dog, is a fighter who takes part in illegal underground boxing competitions. His coach, Ganasaku Nanbu, generally advises him when to lose a fight, making it a fixed match. When Junk Dog wishes to fight Yuri, who is a major league Megalo boxing champion, he gets beaten and bruised really badly. Not having much experience, it was a known fact that Junk Dog would not be able to beat Yuri.

Yuri looked at Junk Dog and asked him to compete with him again at the Megalonia tournament, but Junk Dog would have to be at the top of the Megalo Box rankings for that to happen. Being a determined person, Junk Dog practiced hard, created a fake identity under the name of Joe, and entered the tournament. In just three months, he was able to get to the top of the Megalo Box rankings and was excited to fight in the Megalonia tournament. There were four more competitors there, including Yuri. Joe and Yuri’s fight lasted thirteen rounds, but unfortunately, these thirteen rounds were shown in mere ten minutes – making it feel extremely rushed.

As the series starts coming to an end, the viewers start looking up to each character of ‘Megalo Box.’ Joe and Yuri are both, thankfully, alive – even though it was expected that one of the boxers would die. The episode ends when it is revealed that Joe has finally won the match against Yuri. It is understood that the underlying significance of ‘Megalo Box’ was not the fight that took place between Joe and Yuri. Instead, the Anime series showcased the importance of being able to get over one’s past and win in their own path of life.

What is the story behind the “Nomad” title?

The director of ‘Megalo Box,’ Hiroshi Moriyama, explained to his audience why the name of the second season had been crowned with the word “Nomad.” Moriyama said that the second season is titled ‘Megalo Box 2: Nomad’, and it has a significant meaning to it. He was confused about what the main plot of the second season should focus on. There was nothing on his mind apart from the deadly, ongoing pandemic. He says that a lot has changed since the first season of ‘Megalo Box’ was released while referring to the title “Nomad” as a symbol of isolation, sadness, and abandonment. He also tries to signify how every person leads their own life differently.
