The Korea Hallyu wave has certifiably taken over the world. Oricon is a Japanese music company and authority, which is very much like an international music authority in East Asia. Think of Oricon as the East Asian equivalent of the American Billboard.
At the end of every year, Oricon releases the chart of music which wraps up the music rankings with a neat and tidy little bow. Fans were super excited when they found out that 34 out of 100 rankings were held by Korean Idols. This list includes industry bigwigs such as BTS, Seventeen, SHINee, TXT and so many others. Did you also know, that apart from Michael Jackson, “BTS, The Best” topped the Japanese charts? This is a monumental time for all Korean pop lovers and for Army as well since BTS is the first to achieve this feat 37 years after Michael Jackson! BTS made it big and was the first foreign artist in 37 years to break all records held as well.
Oricon Chart Topper – BTS’s “BTS, THE BEST”
BTS released their Japanese music album titled “BTS, THE BEST.” With a team up of Universal Music and BigHit Music, the album was released on 16 June 2021. Rather than releasing new music, BTS came up with this album so that Army can listen to all their Japanese soundtracks in one place. So, this album combines the studio albums “Face Yourself,” and “Map of the Soul:7 – The Journey” all in one convenient place, making them the number one for the Oricon charts. BTS is already the kings of our hearts – it is not surprising that they have been able to be the kings of the charts as well.
Oricon number five – SEVENTEEN’s “Attacca”
While the name of the boy band is SEVENTEEN, it only has thirteen members, but it does not mean that they lack mettle. SEVENTEEN has been consistently proving their mettle as great content creators and entertainers since most of their albums, EP, and singles have been ranking in the top 10 of all charts, including that of Oricon. Attacca is SEVENTEEN’s ninth EP released on 22 October 2021. It only took them a couple of months to compete for head to head with BTS since they got to number 5 on the Oricon charts as well. Pledis, the music agency for SEVENTEEN released the data, stating that on the first day itself, the EP sold over 1.41 million copies!
Oricon number seventeen – ENHYPEN’s “DIMENSION: DILEMMA”
While ENHYPEN‘s name is derived from the humble hyphen, which refers to “connectivity and growth,” they actually aim to connect the world through their music and create a new act that is pioneering a new type of music for the world while revolutionizing the music in Korea. “Dimension: Dilemma,” is actually their first studio album that has rapidly climbed the charts in order to sit comfortably at the seventeenth rank for Oricon’s charts. This album was released in October, on the 12th in 2021. This album makes it their comeback, which was announced at the end of September. DIMENSION: DILEMMA is actually an album based on the concept of “Intro: Whiteout.”
Oricon number twenty-two – NCT 127’s “Loveholic”
NCT 127 is actually a subgroup of NCT, but we are sure that die-hard fans already know about this fact. Just like BTS, they are the next big thing in music. While BTS cannot be compared to anyone, NCT 127 is similar to them since they are also on their way to becoming some big names in the music industry. With their second Japanese EP, NCT 127 has been able to top the Oricon charts released in February. They topped various Oricon charts with their 2nd Japanese mini-album ‘Lovaholic’ when it was released in February of this year, ranking #1 on Oricon’s daily, weekly, and monthly album charts.
It has also been confirmed that NCT 127 is on its way to tour, so their first dome tour will be held in Japan on May 22, 2022. This will actually be their second tour in Japan since a previous tour was held back in 2019.
