The Undateables: Plot and Soundtrack
The drama series is also known with other names like “Handsome Guy”, “Handsome Guy and Jung Eum”, and “Hoon Nam and Jung Eum”.
The plot of the show is really interesting and engaging for everyone out there who is looking for a heartwarming drama to watch. The two protagonists of the series are the ones that are either afraid or alienated from the idea of love. We meet Kang Hoon-nam, who is the best relationship guru of the time, and Yoo Jung-eum, whose whole life is about falling in love and getting married.
Though, their beginning is not quite appealing as they start on the wrong grounds. Five years ago, Hoon-nam saw Jung-eum at the airport pursuing her then-boyfriend, and then in the present, they come together through a mutual client named Oh Doo-ri and form a misunderstanding that they are each other’s competitors.
Coincidentally or by just fates or destiny, two of Hoon-nam’s friends, Yook Ryong and lee Su-ji hooks up with two of Jung-eum’s friends, Coach Yang and Choi Jin-soo. Hoon-nam has been longtime friends with Su-ji, who is from Australia. And on the other side, Jun-soo has been the best friend and mentor to Jung-eum for a time period of 30 years. He has also been living as a renter at her father’s place for the last few years. Situations take a drastic turn when Su-ji returns to Korea from Australia, and then Hoon-nam has to leave his place so that she can live in. With having nowhere to he ends up living with Jung-eum and Jun-soo, much to the latter’s annoyance.
Though, things don’t work out as the audience wanted them to. But things get interesting again when Hoon-nam and Jung-eum cross paths again as they try to sign Mr. Kim as a client who is dating their other mutual client Doo-ri. Later we see Hoon-nam signing up as a client with Jung-eum’s agency and how Su-ji tries to pressure Jung-eum into manipulating the match so she can be paired with him. Su-ji is persistent to marry him even though his heart doesn’t lie with her.
Talking about the soundtrack of the show then the language is both Korean and English. They have been produced under 935 Entertainment and OGAM Entertainment.
“Some memories fade even without effort, and some memories stay even without efforts”.
In the finale of the show, we see Jung-eum and Hoon-nam planning a wedding. Of course, not their wedding but they call their friends to help them out with the preparations. It was just an entourage at first, but then an argument happened between the actual couple. They realize that each couple has affected each other’s lives in one way or another. The gathering was a good one, and a celebratory one for the unlikely friendship brought together by one unlikely couple.
Then we see Hoon-nam’s stepmother taking the first step for herself and finally putting her priorities first. She has been with her family and attended to their needs for a long and the audience were satisfied as they too understood and respected her decision. The scene in which Hoon-nam embraces his father literally puts all of us in an emotional mess. Seeing them awkward around each other was painful for us, too, but we are sure now that he has actually forgiven him.
And the most interesting part was about the blank oath, which Hoon-nam used very well. Of course, his character is portrayed as a good lister and keen observer, and it was not a surprise for us when he gave Jung-eum a beautiful surprise like that, and indeed he proved himself as a love guru again.
Well, overall, the series gave everyone really high expectations from it. The good and talented actors with a very quirky storyline could have done wonders in television history. But sadly, it was not so good for the series. Many audiences out were disappointed with the drama series as its first few episodes were really appealing for them. But as the story progressed, their interest seemed to fade away. Moreover, they failed in the execution of a story that could have been really engaging and appealing to the audience out there.
The romance trope in the series is not quite impressive as the plot points are all over the place. The genre of romantic comedy was portrayed and woven well in the first few episodes of the show. But with the progress ahead, it started to look like the creators are too devoted to the selected genre and are afraid to bend the plot and take some risks on bending some well-known clichés.
Apart from all these, there were still some moments in there that you might absolutely love. The characters are just loved and have played their part really well. You can watch the show if you are looking for some good cast performance, but if you are looking for a good and engaging plot, then you can skip it.
