There’s more to K-dramas than being about love and romance, there is revenge. The Korean cinema industry has given the world some best outlooks on various situations. Let it be a zombie apocalypse or the raging capitalism. The revenge K-dramas are one of the best media pieces out there. The K-drama of the day being MBC’s 2016 show, ‘Monster’ shows a man plotting his revenge against the elite people with the corruption in their system, won’t let that happen. Taking the viewers through the system of the elites with surprising twists and turns. ‘Monster’ keeps the viewers glued to their screens and seats.
Known as the ‘Makjang’ drama, ‘Monster’ comes in the list of over-the-top k-dramas that have exaggerated plotlines. As the thing would be on the verge of getting better. A whole lot of troubles like birth secrets, false identities, amnesia, adultery, revenge, murder, and more would be thrown in to make the story excited. Even though the fans of the ‘Monster’ themselves call it a crazy show, they love every minute of the drama. The cast members have done such a good job, followed by good character development. The Cast and The Characters
Directed by Joo Sung Woo, the K-drama was written by Jang Yeong Cheol. The first choice of the lead actors for the K-drama was Seo Kang Joon and Hwang Jung Eum. But due to scheduling issues, both actors were unable to join the cast. The production team went on to get some of the best artists out there for the show. ‘Coffee House’ and ‘Lie To Me’ fame Kang Ji Hwan went on to join the cast as Kang Ki Tan. While Sun Yu Ri, who is known for her roles in shows like ‘First Love of A Royal Prince’ and ‘Secret of the Birth’, plays Oh Soo Yeon. She is also a former member of the K-pop group Fin. K.L. Park Ki Woong, known for his role in Rookie Historian Goo Hae-Ryung, plays Do Gun Woo.
The supporting cast includes Soo Hyun plays the role of Yoo Sung Ae. She’ll be coming back in the upcoming drama ‘Chimera’. ‘When the Devil Calls Your Name’ fame Lee El plays the role of Ok Chae Rung. ‘Tale of the Nine-Tailed’ and ‘Forest’ fame Jo Bo Ah play the role of Do Shin Young. ‘Chief of Staff’ fame Jung Woong In plays the role of Moon Tae Gwang. ‘The Merchant: Gaekju 2015’ fame Lee Deok Hwa plays he role of Do Gwang Woo. ‘Homemade Love Story’ fame Jung Bo Suk plays the role of Byun Il Jae. Known for his role in ‘Run On’ recently, Park Young Gyu joins the cast to play the role of Do Choong.
Along with Kim Hye Eun playing the role of Hwang Ji Soo and Go Yoon playing the role of Cha Woo. Lee Kyu Seop plays the role of Ddolman. Song Kyung Chul plays the role of butler Kong Bok Shin.
‘Monster’ K-drama: How The Story Starts?
Kang Ji Hwan, a homeless and blind beggar, lives in the city of Seoul. With people barely helping him in need, he gets laughed at and teased everywhere he goes. Being at bottom of the pyramid of society, he has no power or contacts to his name. Even though the people at the top pushes the bottom to the end for their good. Ji Hwan doesn’t wanna die as he has a purpose, a revenge to take. Going into the flashback, we get to know that Kang Ji Hwan wasn’t Kang Ji Hwan before but was Lee Gook Chul.
Son of the CEO of a medical research lab and a hospital. On his birthday lunch, his parents were talking to his aunts and had some disagreement over investments. The small argument didn’t end on a good note as the car he was in along with his parents got into an accident. With the failed breaks, the car got drifted and hung over the edge of the hill. While his mother managed to push him off the car, he saw somebody push the car from the hill. Waking up at the hospital, he got to know that his parents were dead and all his assets were under his aunt’s name. With a chance of going blind for life, his hearing abilities become very active. Throughout his teen years, he lived with the fear of being killed by his guardians.
He fires anyone who feels like a danger to him, just like Cha Jung Eun. Her father used to work at the hospital but fired over Jung Eun screaming at him. But a few days later, she joined as a maid at his house. Cha Jung Eun was determined to become a good maid and not lose the job. Although Gook Chul went on to dismiss how they both met the first time. Jung Eun explains everything to him and apologizes for misunderstandings. Leaving their old encounter behind, he gave her three strikes.
On the other side, the potential people behind the accident, Man Ok and Kwan Woo. They were trying to make the deal again. Man Ok made Jung Eun her secret spy and told her to keep an eye on Gook Chul. Hearing that he fired Jung Eun and had only Secretary Ok on his side. Together they manage to stop the contract from being signed. After the meeting falling behind, and his guards and attorney went against him and got fired. We also get to know the real mind behind Gook Chul’s accident. And along with big twists and turns, Jung Eun comes back to her job as the maid. But the things keep falling apart in Gook Chul’s life.
While he’s trying to win Jung Eun over, he gets a call. The person on the other side of the phone claimed that he knew about the person behind the parents’ death. Baiting him with the information and calling him into the research lab to get a virus strain. Using the strain to kill his aunt and revoke his rights on the family inheritance. After going through sickness and another accident, Gook Chul found himself in the middle of a garbage mountain. Becoming Kang Ji Hwan, he has been living like a beggar raging with the fire of revenge.

Living as a blind homeless beggar isn’t easy for sure. But it’s not just the physical limitations that society gives him every day. Suffering from PTSD, Gook Chul’s enemies are still chasing him in his dreams. Dying every night in Il Jae’s hands, he prepares himself in the real world to face him. The gangsters in the area he begs in demands fees. Risking all the money he saved to fix his eyes. His life takes a turn when he runs into the only person he ever had by his side before the accident. Running into Secratory Ok Chae Ryung at a subway station. Things begin to change. Gook Chul being the only person with the vaccine in his body, becomes a very important asset that his enemies are still looking for.

The k-drama ‘Monster’ is available to watch on the streaming services like Viu and Amazon Prime. The show has 50 episodes in total, with each episode having a runtime of around 50 minutes to 60 minutes. With all the twists and turns in the show, it will be hard for the viewers to leave their seats though. Going over 50 hours, the whole k-drama can be binge-watched within a week or two.
