John belongs to a family of musicians. His father, Johnny Williams, was a jazz drummer and percussionist. He used to play with Raymond Scott Quinet on the live stage. Joh, too had an interest in music, so he went in to study composition privately with the Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He used to play the piano and brass and conducted and arranged music for the US Air Force after three years of graduating. Planning to become a concert pianist, he moved to New York. But inspired by contemporary pianists like John Browning and Van Cliburn, he decided to switch his focus to composition.
Moving back to Los Angeles, he began working as an orchestrator at film studios. Soon after, he collaborated with guitarist Bob Bain, bassist Rolly Bundock, and drummer Jack Sperling on his first project. John has a great career outside the films too. Succeeding Arthur Fiedler, he became the Principal Conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra in 1980. He went on to serve to position till 1993.
