Was There A Ritual?
To finally destroy IT, the Losers had to regain their memories of the events of that fateful summer of 1989. The Ritual of Chüd, essentially a struggle of wills against IT and one of the oldest and most perplexing sections of King’s work, comes into action at this time in the plot of the movie.
The movie has simplified the novel in a lot of ways to make it digestible for the viewers who haven’t read the book. Since the Ritual of Chüd is hard to understand, the ending of the movie could be confusing. Don’t worry! We have got you.

What We Know About The Ritual Of Chüd
After the first chapter, The Losers’ club had all gone away and forgotten practically everything about their lives in Derry 27 years after the first event took place. That is, with the exception of Mike, who has discovered ways to recall what happened. Following Adrian Mellon’s murder in the movie’s opening scene, Mike summons his friends to inform them of IT’s reappearance triggering their memories.
On everyone’s arrival, Mike reveals he has been following every possible lead to destroying IT. He discovered a way to destroy IT, once and for all. Mike is convinced they are supposed to perform the Ritual of Chüd to end IT. To perform the ritual, each member of the Losers’ Club is supposed to pick a token from their childhood to burn in the Native American artifact that Mike had stolen.
This ritual is an adaptation from the Stephen King novel. In the movie, the Ritual of Chüd is shown in an animated scenario in which Bill experiences a vision of IT crash-landing on Earth in an asteroid-like catastrophe. Bill observes and notices as IT turns into a before rapidly shifting between a series of hideous shapes while feeding on the descendants of the Native American tribe that Mike sought for, despite the fact that it appears in its actual form of the Deadlights. The tribe is then depicted standing around the artifact while a fire burns inside, indicating that they are practicing the Chüd Ritual. Unfortunately, the tribe only manages to trap IT instead of ending and killing him.
Do The Losers defeat IT after all?
The Losers’ Club descends into the sewers and begins the ceremony, which entails chanting and burning of the tokens from their childhood only to fail at it! Surprise! Mike LIED about the Ritual of Chüd, failing to mention that the Native Americans who attempted it were murdered by Pennywise. His excuse was that believing the ritual would work was the key.
The Losers’ Club soon realizes that the only way to defeat Pennywise is to bully him, to make him appear insignificant. They make IT feel that he’s nothing more than a funny clown, shrinking it down. In the end, Bill reaches in and takes IT’s heart from its chest, crushing it and killing it. The scene occurs right after Eddie is killed by IT’s a clown-spider hybrid form, and the sorrow of seeing their friend die probably was what eventually gave the Losers’ Club they needed to defeat IT.
IT’s entire existence as a monster is founded on terror, and the Losers’ belief that IT is unbeatable contributes to their defeat. Once IT’s influence fades, the Losers finally conquer their fear of him, making him easy prey for a dose of his own medicine.

Is IT’s Death Debatable?
IT Chapter Two ends with Pennywise’s demise but so did the first movie. Isn’t it fair to wonder whether IT has been defeated or will it return in another IT film to haunt? Well, this time, IT has been permanently defeated. Beverly told the Losers Club about the visions she’d had seen after seeing the deadlights, which envisioned them fighting IT as adults, and they signed their blood pact to ensure they would return at the of IT (2017). This is a unique situation. Pennywise simply does not flee from the Losers in Chapter 2 but is definitely slain by them.
More importantly, when they return to the surface after defeating IT, they discover that the blood pact wounds on their palms have finally healed. IT will never return to Derry and the oath is no longer required. That is, at least, how it appears. IT, on the other hand, is an ancient cosmic organism whose apparent physical death may not be its ultimate end. The Losers’ battle with Pennywise may be done, but IT’s existence is unlikely to be.
IT: Chapter Two Ending Explained
The Losers depart the Neilbolt house after finally beating IT and return to the quarry where they swam together as kids. Bev is the first to plunge off the cliff into the water, followed by the boys. Richie begins to grieve at Eddie’s death as they wash the filth from the sewers.
After the Losers return home, it is discovered that Stan penned a letter to each of them before his death, indicating that he knew they would not be able to beat IT until every Loser still living was present in the final battle. He wrote he was too afraid to face IT.
Bill finishes the first chapter of his new novel; Richie returns to Derry’s kissing bridge to recarve the “R+E,” which means Richie+Eddie that he carved as a child. Bev tells everyone she had a beautiful dream implying her nightmares are gone, as they sit together on a boat. Mike is shown driving away.
