What to expect from The Last Dance Season 2?

If ESPN and Netflix greenlight the second season of The Last Dance, it is probably not going to center around Michael Jordan. Instead, the series might tell the story of the life, rise to fame, and tragic death of another great NBA superstar. We’re referring to the late Kobe Bryant. A legend that for two decades gave us great showcases of sportsmanship, as well as wonderful accomplishments in the basketball discipline.

Kobe Byrant was one of Jordan’s rivals when they played together. And they respected each other and had a good friendship. In fact, when Kobe passed away, Jordan lamented that so much that he expressed that it was almost as though as if one part of him died with Bryant. Both Bryant and Jordan share similarities in regard to team loyalty. Jordan to the Bulls, and Bryant to the Lakers.

The possibilities of a Kobe Bryant docuseries is real

When Bryant retired in his final season, he had a camera crew follow him all around. Just like Michael Jordan. And now that Kobe is no longer with us, that footage has historical relevance to the chronicling of a sport that shaped and influenced the lives of millions of persons around the world. Another veteran of the game, Magic Johnson, has referred to how inevitable it is to make a documentary about Kobe Bryant.

The kind of camera access that Kobe Bryant had during his last season was unlike Jordan’s. His was much more intense. Almost a reality show intense. This footage gives us a glimpse not only into his professional life, the relationship with his co-workers at the Los Ángeles Lakers but also with this family and friends.

Who was Kobe Bryant?

Los Ángeles Lakers’ shooting guard for 20 years, Kobe Bryant, was born on August 23, 1978, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A true legend of the sport, he won with the Lakers five NBA championships, was an NBA Most Valuable Player, played 18 out of his 20 years in the All-Star game. Moreover, he was a Slam Dunk Champion — with his reverse 360 dunks becoming iconic—and a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

Kobe’s signature moves were one of his dunks and —like the GOAT Michael Jordan— a fadeaway jump shot. Known for taking risky shots in moments of close games where the scores were tight, Bryant almost always managed to get the Lakers on top. Known for his bravado, he would tell the crowds to shut up after doing a great move that the opposing team fans would boo him from the stands. While efficient, he was also reckless. His ability to make difficult shots also made the team vulnerable. In fact, he missed more three-pointers than any other NBA player in the history of the game.

Personal Life

Kobe married Vanessa Laine in 2001 and had four children with her. Throughout his life, Bryant was a practicing Catholic. Hours before his death, he was attending mass. On a side note, he was a polyglot: he spoke English, Italian and Spanish fluently. Despite his successful career, he had a setback. In 2003, he was arrested for a sexual assault charge of a hotel employee in Colorado. In the midst of the problem, Bryant was accused of abusing a woman. He said that he had had consensual sex with the woman, and they settled the case out of court.

After the scandal, Kobe recovered many endorsements. And his career normalized. He had a regular contract with Adidas, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Nintendo, Lenovo, Hublot, Panini, Sprite, Alibaba, Upper Deck, Body Armour, Nutella, Aston Martin, Turkish Airlines, and was the cover athlete for 9 NBA video game titles. By the time of his death, his net worth was about US$ 600 million. Moreover, Kobe owned stakes in production companies. He had written a book titled “The Mamba Mentality: How I Play”. Kobe owned stocks in energy drink companies, venture capital firms, real estate, and athletic training business venture firms.

Kobe Bryant died on January 26, 2020, along with his daughter Gianna, six family friends, and a pilot in a nasty helicopter crash near the side of a mountainous region in Calabasas, California, in the vicinity of Los Ángeles.
