it is no doubt that Christopher Nolan is one of the best directors the world has ever seen. Each of his projects is a delight to the movie fans. While his latest movie Tenet is still the topic of discussion among movie addicts, some of the fans are asking if there are any possibilities for interstellar 2. in this article, we will be looking at everything we know so far about the sequel to Christopher Nolan’s Masterpiece Interstellar. For those who don’t know, Interstellar is a 2014 science fiction drama film. The story of the movie is set in a dystopian future where humanity is struggling to survive and follows a group of astronauts who travel through a wormhole near Saturn in the quest for searching for a new home for humanity.
The movie’s screenplay was developed by Christopher and his brother Jonathan Nolan, which was based on the script Jonathan had developed back in 2007. Interstellar was produced by Christopher Nolan with his wife, Emma Thomas, through their production company Syncopy, and with Lynda Obst through Lynda Obst Productions. The film had a worldwide gross of over $677 million, and later a total of $701 million with subsequent re-releases, making it the tenth-highest-grossing film of 2014. Just like many other Nolan creations, Interstellar also received positive reviews. The film had won the 87th Academy Awards, for Best Visual Effects, and was also nominated for Best Original Score, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Production Design.
It’s the year 2067, where humanity is facing threats from crop blights and dust storms. We see Cooper, a widowed engineer and former NASA pilot, who is now a farmer. Cooper lives with his father-in-law, Donald, his 15-year-old son, Tom Cooper, and his 10-year-old daughter, Murphy Cooper. When a pattern of the dust storm, appears in Murphy’s bedroom, she attributes the anomaly to a ghost.
Cooper deduces the patterns to find out they were caused by gravity variations. He discovers that those patterns represent geographic coordinates in binary code. Cooper follows the coordinates to a secret NASA facility headed by Professor John Brand. Here they came to know that 48 years earlier, unknown beings positioned a wormhole near Saturn, which opened a path to a distant galaxy with 12 potentially habitable worlds that are located near a black hole named Gargantua.
Twelve volunteers were sent through the wormhole to individually survey the planets and three among them, Dr. Mann, Laura Miller, and Wolf Edmunds reported positive results. Based on the data provided by them, Professor Brand comes up with two plans, to protect humanity. In Plan A, they plan to develop a gravitational propulsion theory to propel settlements into space, and for plan B they are planning to launch Endurance spacecraft carrying 5,000 frozen human embryos to settle them in a habitable planet.
Cooper joins the team and gets recruited to pilot the Endurance. Before leaving, Cooper gives his daughter his wristwatch to compare their relative time for when he returns. After traversing the wormhole, Dr. Romilly studies the black hole while Cooper, Dr. Doyle, and Dr. Amelia Brand descend the aircraft to investigate Miller’s planet, an ocean world covered in knee-high water.
After finding the wreckage from Miller’s ship, Brand, insisting on checking the wreckage, but disobeys Cooper’s order to re-board immediately. Unfortunately, this leads to Doyle’s death by a gigantic wave. Due to Gargantua’s proximity, time is severely dilated. By the time Cooper and Brand returns, 23 years elapsed for Romilly on Endurance.
Cooper decides to use their remaining fuel to reach Mann’s planet, where they revive him from cryostasis. Meanwhile, at the earth, Murphy now becomes a scientist working for NASA and transmits a message announcing Professor Brand has died. Thankfully, She had learned that Plan A, which required unattainable data from within a black hole, was never viable.
Murphy accuses Brand and Cooper of knowing that those left on Earth were doomed. After all this, Cooper decides to return to Earth while Brand and Romilly will remain on Mann’s planet for permanent habitation. While Mann and Cooper explore the planet, Mann sends falsified data to Coper that the planet is uninhabitable and attempts to kill Cooper.
Mann then takes a lander and heads for Endurance. Meanwhile, Romilly is killed by a booby trap left by Mann. Meanwhile Brand and Cooper race to the Endurance in another lander. While heading towards the ship, Mann dies following a failed docking operation, severely damaging Endurance. After a difficult docking manoeuver, Cooper was able to regain control of the Endurance.
Upon realizing there wasn’t enough fuel to reach Edmunds’ planet, they use a slingshot maneuver. Since they were so close to Gargantua that time dilation adds another 51 years. Slipping through the event horizon of Gargantua, they get eject from their respective crafts and finds themselves inside a massive tesseract, that was constructed by future humans inside the singularity.
Across different periods, Cooper was able to see through the bookcases of Murphy’s old room on Earth and weakly interact with its gravity. It was at this time Cooper realizes he was Murphy’s ghost. Cooper manipulates the second hand of the wristwatch that he gave to Murphy, using Morse code to transmit all the quantum data that TARS had collected from inside the event horizon.
Back on Earth, Murphy also realizes that the ghost was Cooper from the future and deciphers the Morse code. After getting Ejected from the tesseract, Cooper was rescued by a space habitat orbiting Saturn, where he reunites with an elderly Murphy. Using the quantum data sent by Cooper, the younger Murphy was able to solve the gravitational propulsion theory for Plan A, thus enabling humanity’s mass exodus and survival.
The cast of Interstellar includes Matthew McConaughey as Joseph Cooper, the widowed NASA pilot who becomes a farmer after the agency was closed by the government. Anne Hathaway is Dr. Amelia Brand, a NASA scientist, and astronaut who goes with Cooper for the mission. Jessica Chastain as Murphy Cooper, Joseph’s daughter, figures out Plan A to rescue humanity.
Mackenzie Foy as young Murphy, Ellen Burstyn as old Murphy, John Lithgow as Donald, Cooper’s elderly father-in-law. Michael Caine as Professor John Brand, the high-ranking NASA scientist, the creator of Plan A, and the former mentor of Cooper, as well as the father of Amelia Brand. David Gyasi as Romilly, another high-ranking NASA member, as well as Endurance crew member.
Wes Bentley as Doyle, another high-ranking NASA member, and Endurance crew member. Casey Affleck as Tom Cooper, Joseph’s son. Timothée Chalamet as young Tom, Matt Damon as Mann, Bill Irwin as TARS and CASE, Josh Stewart as CASE’s voice, Topher Grace as Getty, Murph’s colleague, and love interest, Leah Cairns as Lois, Tom’s wife. David Oyelowo as School Principal, Collette Wolfe as Ms. Hanley, William Devane as Williams, another NASA member, Elyes Gabel as Administrator, and Jeff Hephner as Doctor.
Will there be an Interstellar 2?
Interstellar is one of the very few Nolan movies where the audience’s most questions get answered. This movie had a very satisfying ending. But despite this, many are clamoring for a sequel and are even hoping for one. Not only the fans but McConaughey had also stated that he is interested to return for a second installation in the movie’s franchise.
When McConaughey was asked if the movie Interstellar is happening, he replied that there is the possibility for Interstellar 2 if everything goes right. By this, we can assume that there is a slight possibility for Interstellar 2, but there are no projects that are currently in development as a sequence to the movie. And for all those getting excited about McConaughey’s comment, it was 7 years ago. Time has passed a lot. But still, we can have a small ray of hope that Nolan will make Interstellar 2 Someday.
