The Story of Inscryption
Inscryption is an indie game developed by Daniel Mullins. Inscryption is not the first game from the developer. Daniel Mullins is famous for creating several other games, including the cult classic The Hex. By the end, the players are not left with much clarity about the ending. The story of the game begins with Luke, a young man, who discovered a disk in the middle of the woods.
The disk was buried there by Kaycee. Kaycee was the one behind the creation of the digital version of Inscryption. In the first act of the game, Kaycee can be seen as a Death Card as well as a minion of Gimora in the second. Kaycee realized that her game was used to influence the real world through OLD DATA or the Karnoffel Code and decided to get rid of the game.
Soon after hiding the game, she was found dead. But no one knows the reason behind her death and is left with different rumors. One states that she was killed by a falling piece of ice, mentioned in Inscryption‘s Grave Marker Puzzl. While Kaycee’s mother tells Luke over the phone that her daughter was killed by a fire, but is not ready to reveal how she got into it.
As for the protagonist of the series, Luke Carder, he is a YouTuber. He had once came across some old packs of the physical card game that Kaycee owned, which led him to the set of coordinates where the disk was hidden. This is how Luke found the hidden game from the woods. Luke decides to play through the game and find more details about Kaycee, GameFuna, OLD DATA, and how the creator of the game, Kaycee, was killed.
Meanwhile, Luke was trying to dig the truth; the hostile AI Scrybes in the game wanted to transmit the OLD DATA to the world or to delete it completely. As Luke progresses in the game, he understands that there is something wrong with the game and discovers that the Scrybes, four AI beings or bosses that live in Inscryption, can alter the code of the game.
And these changes in the game has also been affecting the real world around it and has been influenced by OLD DATA. Meanwhile, a woman named Amanda arrives asking to Luke’s demanding the game disk to be handed over to GameFuna, the company where Kaycee had worked. They were trying to get the OLD DATA back. As Luke speaks with her at his door, a glitch happens in real life that changes the color of his shirt and the time of day while they were speaking for the first time.
It gets soon revealed that Kaycee was given special tools to make the game as perfect as possible. As part of that, she was assigned with an object referred to as the Triangle (00000011), which was a coding project developed by GameFuna to help with the coding of games. The code was made by a programmer named Irving, who is referred to as the Blue Man inside the Inscryption game.
It was disclosed that GameFuna, is a company that was hired to make the game as part of a CIA operation to spread the OLD DATA across the world. Their plan was to spread the program throughout the world like a computer virus and then use them as a supercomputer. By the end of the game, Luke smashes the game disk with a hammer.
Meanwhile, Grimora has taken over Luke’s computer to get rid of Inscryption and the OLD DATA code. Luke soon gets shot by Amanda, which kills him. She enters his home, takes the disk, and the game comes to an end. This may be surprising for many as we didn’t get a proper ending, and we still don’t know if the code was actually destroyed if the company was able to retrieve them. So what has happened? Let us look in detail at the ending of Inscryption.
Inscryption Ending Explained
By the end of the game, one thing we all know is that Inscryption was created by GameFuna as part of hiding their OLD DATA. Luke Carder, who was in the quest to find the truth behind the game, was shot dead by the GameFuna employee to get the game back. We can understand that OLD DATA is something of a great evil that has been hiding behind the game.
As much evil as the OLD DATA is, we can also guess how powerful this program can be. It seems like it can exist in real life as well as is aware of the surroundings. This could be the reason why PO3 wants to upload its version to the internet. Throughout the game, you can find the references to Karnoffel Code, and we think that this code is related to OLD DATA and can untie many questions surrounding it.
In-universe, it is said that only a man named Barry Wilkinson was able to solve the Karnofflel code, which he had obtained from the corpse of Adolph Hitler. It also seems like Kaycee Hobbes was also trying to break this code but was prevented by her death as GameFuna, the developer behind the game, may have found that she was working on this project and may want to stop her from turning against them.
Inside the game, we can see that each Scrybe is trying to find the OLD DATA and whichever Scrybe possess the necessary fragment of the OLD_DATA at a given time is the Prime Scrybe. When the game is reset, each Scrybe goes back to its original position but retains its memory. When PO3 gets control, he wants to start The Great Transcendence and wants to take over as Prime Scrybe.
After solving several codes, you will be able to find a video that depicts PO3’s version of Inscription restarting its upload. As of now, we still need to do some diggings to understand what this means in real, though looking at many of Dan Mullins’ games, so this could simply be a hint of what’s to come next. All the questions that are still left might be answered in the next part of the game; at least, that’s what we are expecting it to be.
