Episode 8 Recap
Episode 8 explored the fallout of Clinton’s affair with Lewinsky getting public. Bill finally opens up to Hillary about his affair and confesses his wrongdoing. The episode opened with Hillary and Bill giving an interview for the 60 Minutes news show. This was in 1992 when the news of Bill’s 12-year affair with Ginnifer Flowers had just broken. Although refusing to give an interview at first, when Hillary realized that it had already been decided without her, she agrees to it. At the interview, Bill refuses all allegations of an affair. Meanwhile, Hillary says that it’s a private matter. She also adds that it has little relevance to the country. Later she goes on to say that she’s not like Tammy Wynette singing “Stand By Your Man”.
She says she is with Bill because of her love and respect for him. Following the interview, Hillary learns that Bill’s approval ratings have gone up. Meanwhile, the public perception towards her has turned negative. We then move to 1998, and Monica Lewinsky heads to her father’s in California. Hillary gives an interview to Matt Lauer and sides with her husband again. She terms the allegations as a “vast right-wing conspiracy.” Back in California, Monica meets with her father and later watches Marcia’s testimony on TV. Ginsberg and Lewinsky’s father argue over not having an immunity deal yet. Meanwhile, Starr, Bennet, and Emmick discuss what they can do. Ken has come up with something — and it involves”turning up the heat.”
Bill’s Confession, Lewinsky Strikes A Deal
FBI summons Lewinsky again, they take her fingerprints and writing sample, before releasing her. She fears that she will get arrested. However, that doesn’t happen as her dad gets a new lawyer while Ginsberg steps down. They all head to Ken Starr’s office to strike a deal. Under this deal, Monica will reveal everything in exchange for immunity for herself and her family. Meanwhile, Bill learns that Monica is testifying and that they need her blood for a DNA sample. He eventually agrees and the test is a match. Later, Bill finally confesses to his wife. Hillary bursts out in anger, telling Bill he lied to her and that she was a fool to trust him.
Edie Falco gives a notable performance as the former first lady as she reacts to Bill’s continued lies. She lambasts him for jeopardizing their marriage for sexual gratification. Bill tells her that there was never any sex, but that’s not the point Hillary dwells on. It’s the act of betraying her trust when she put all of hers in him and acted as a team. The rest of the episode sees Bill try to make her talk to him but the marriage has suffered beyond fractures. She tells him that it’s just an arrangement now, and neither leaving or staying would be good. In any case, it’s her who loses.
