When it comes to shounen animes, Hunter x Hunter has carved a special place for itself in this category. The manga was created and illustrated by Yoshiro Togashi, and it has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump since March 1998. But the manga has frequently gone on extended hiatuses since 2006. The last episode of the anime was “Episode 148: Past x and x Future,” and it was aired on 24 September 2014. The anime has been on Hiatus since then, much to the dismay of fans around the world. Due to this, the fans of Gon and friends haven’t been able to follow up with their adventures. So just to refresh your minds, here we have brought you 8 facts about Gon Freecss that you might not have known.
Hunter x Hunter follows the story of our four protagonists, Gon Freecss, Killua Zoldyck, Kurapika Kurta, and Leorio Paradinight, as the four come together to explore and find out their paths to follow in life. All four of them wish to become Hunters, and they meet each other during the hunter exam. However, the anime mainly focuses on Gon’s quest to find his father, who left him at a young age, who was also a hunter. So, in order to know more about his dad and become a hunter himself, Gon ventures out of his island home at the tender age of 11. So let’s get to know more about our young hero Gon Freecss!
1. Gon was not born with any special Ability
Gon Freecss is unlike any other popular shonen protagonist in the fact that he was born without any special ability. He is very different from Naruto, who was born with a nine-tailed beast inside of him, or Natsu, who has the power of the dragon Igneel. Even Yusuke Urameshi, one of Togashi’s own creations, was actually the son of a demon king, so even he kind of had an advantage. Gon’s only cheat ability is his willingness and perseverance to learn any new trick. The boy just never gives up and always looks at everything with curiosity.

2. Gon is like a Blank Canvas
When Gon was first introduced into the anime, he was like a black canvas who was soaking up every new information he could find. Gon has a very trusting and child-like personality. However, the edges of his character were not explored that much in the beginning.
3. Gon’s Nen ability is not that powerful
Th nen power system in Hunter x Hunter is undoubtedly the best power system in the anime scene. Togashi had really gone all out while designing the complexities and intricacies of it. Gon’s Jajanken is not even one of the highest-ranked nen abilities in the show. It is quite simple when compared to the powers of others, especially Kurapika’s who is a specialist.
4. He is a fast learner
Gon leaves his home with only his fishing rod, fast reflexes, and out-of-the-box thinking. He trained to gain his nen under Wing along with Killua in the Heavens Arena arc. Both of them are shown to be very fast learners, learning the basics of Nen like Ten, Ren, and Zetsu in just half a day. Killua does pick up on certain things faster, but that is because he was trained as an assassin from the age of six. Gon was picking it just as fast without any prior training.
5. He does not have high morals
Gon Freecss, being the protagonist of a shounen anime, is shown to be good-natured and generally helpful. But his morals are quite vague. He can look at the horrible things happening around him in the world and not be engulfed by the darkness. He gets angry at the phantom troupe for killing his friend’s clan but does not hate them. Gon, also, does not mind hurting Killua’s hands just to win against Razor in the Greed Island arc. His morality is inconsistent, which makes him a more realistic character for the fans to relate to.

6. Gon Freecss is very similar to Yusuke Urameshi
He is very similar to Togashi’s other creation Yusuke Urameshi from the anime Yu Yu Hakusho. Yusuke also wears a green-themed suit and is number 3 in popularity amongst fans, very much like Gon. However, their personalities are very different. Both of their abilities are very simple. Gon uses the Jajanken, and Yusuke uses a spirit gun.
7. He is very simple-minded
In many instances in the anime, Gon can be seen releasing smoke from his ears when he learns anything too complex. This especially happens when Killua is explaining maths. Since his character is child-like and simple, his abilities are simple as well. This is why Gon came up with a simple nen ability like rock-paper-scissors. Even the name Jajanken was not thought of by him. He accidentally mispronounced the word ‘janken’ in front of his opponent Knuckle, who thought his power was called ‘Jajanken’. The name just stuck as Gon did not have any better ideas.
8. Gon Freecss is a complex character
Since the beginning of the series, Gon’s character is not explored in much detail. His character development later in the series can be quite shocking to fans. His morals are as vague as they come. During the Chimera arc, he falls into a pit of darkness consumed by the grief of a lost loved one and the desire for revenge. He does not care about anyone else at that point, not even himself, and acts very selfishly in order to get his revenge.
But he is shown to be kind-hearted and lovely towards most people he meets throughout the series, which makes his descent all the more jarring to watch. Killua once described him as being an embodiment of light.
