After the success of other Netflix originals like Dragon’s Dogma and Devilman Crybaby, we will now come across another anime originally created by Netflix, titled ‘Yasuke.’

Yasuke is based on the historical figure, who was an African man with the same name. He was a warrior who worked under a powerful Japanese magnate, Oda Nobunaga, in the sixteenth century. It was the time of the Sengoku period of the samurai conflict in Japan. The series is expected to release on 29th April 2021 on Netflix. Created by a famous American animator, LeSean Thomas, Yasuke has created a stir on the internet.

More about Yasuke: Plot Summary and production

It is a story about an African descent warrior who served in Japan under a powerful magnate and dealt with various problems and attacks. Yasuke is a blend of magic and technology. The unfolds when the Japanese magnate, Oda Nobunaga, falls in a battle against the warlord. After twenty years, Yasuke, who is also known as the ‘black Samurai’, buries his past as a warrior and retires from the title. He then disguises himself by the name Yassan, in a remote village, as a boatman. There he meets a singer and his daughter who possess magical powers.

Due to some mishap, Yasuke escorts the little girl to the doctor. There, his struggle to save the child from the dark supernatural powers, along with fighting the rival daimyo, engulfs the story, creating a beautiful depiction.

The series was first announced in November 2018, and then the creation was initiated. The directors of this series are LeSean Thomas Takeshi Satou, and the animation was done by studio MAPPA, based in Japan. Musical artist Steven Ellison, who is popularly known as  Flying Lotus, is part of the crew as the executive producer of the project. The English recordings were done in NYAV Post in New York City. Likewise, the music for the series has a bit of organic touch rather than hip hop or jazz.

One of the major roles in the series got their voices from famous artists. For example, Yasuke has been voiced by LaKeith Stanfield in English and in Japanese by Jun Soejima. Similarly, Takehiro Hira gave his voice, both in English and Japanese, to the character of Oda Nobunaga. Apart from these, Kiko Tamura in Japanese and Maya Tanida in English have voiced for the little girl, Saki. Ishikawa is voiced by Dia Frampton in English. And, Natsumaru is voiced by Ming-Na Wen, to name a few.
