All goes wrong as the experiment fails as they acquire horrible injuries instead of bringing back their mother. While the whole of Alphonse’s body is destroyed, Edward loses a leg. Edward, to save his brother and preserve Alphonse’s soul, sacrifices an arm to bind his brother’s soul to a massive set of armor.
The brothers are saved with the aid of their close friends, Pinako Rockbell and her granddaughter Winry, who is a famed prodigy in the field of biomechanical engineering. Winry uses automail, a special metal used in the armor of robots and the military to manufacture prosthetic limbs for Edward.
